

Joseph A Gonzales, aged 85, went to his eternal rest on December 7, 2024. He was a beloved husband, a devoted father, warm-hearted grandfather, a faithful brother, and a true friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Born on April 29, 1939, in San Antonio, Texas, he was one of 12 children to parents, Alfonso and Isabel Gonzales. He grew up on the West side of San Antonio and would later graduate being a very proud alum of Sidney Lanier High School and later to acquire some college. He would serve in the United States Air Force, Air National Guard, and retire as a Master Sergeant. This would lead him to his many years as a plumber working at Kelly Air Force Base. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others.
An absolute beloved husband to wife, Carmen Gonzales. They were married for 59 wonderful years and were blessed with a son whom they love and adore. He was a dedicated family man who cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. He was a man of generosity, faith, love, and would always put his family’s needs above his own.
In his free time, he enjoyed playing trumpet and being a great musician. He played for bands like Tex-Mex and The Ruben Portillo Orchestra, and could find him at weddings, quinces, and the Haymarket at NIOSA during fiesta week. His other hobbies included league bowling, helping friends, used to love to fish, loved his trips to Las Vegas, and frequently played lottery scratch-offs.
One of his most important roles was “Popo” to his granddaughters, Sommer and Izabella, and his great granddaughter, Leia. He loved spending time with them, sharing stories, playing games, and watching their favorite TV shows. No matter how he was feeling, he was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement, no matter what challenges they faced.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Carmen, his son, J.J. and wife, Cyndi, and his grandchildren, Sommer and Izabella, his great granddaughter, Leia. Brothers Alfonso, Gilbert, Carlos and sisters Gloria and Stella, and numerous nieces & nephews. His memory will be cherished by the huge community of friends who knew him, as well.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuary.
