

Joe was born on September 9, 1942, in San Antonio. He was the son of W.R. Shug Harris and Tillie Harris. The family lived in Tyler, Texas and then moved to San Antonio in 1952.
Joe was a 1960 graduate of Alamo Heights High School where he was a three year starter on the varsity football team and Sgt. of Arms of his senior class.
He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi social fraternity. He graduated on January 23, 1965, with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing.
He married the love of his life, his wife Leah, on the same day he graduated. He always joked that if he ever forgot his anniversary all he had to do was look at his diploma on the wall!
Joe went to work for Texaco, Inc. as a salesman and after training in Austin was assigned to work in San Antonio on September 1, 1965.
On February 1, 1972, Joe started a new career as an agent with State Farm Insurance.
Joe was a charter member of the North Central Optimist Club of San Antonio, where he was twice president and on the Board of Directors.
Joe was predeceased by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Leah Frances Harris; his three sons, Wade and wife, Missy of San Antonio, David and wife, Heather of San Antonio and Glenn and wife, Jody of Austin. Joe had three grandchildren, Wade and Missy's son, Colin and daughter, Brenna and Glenn and Jody's daughter, Kylie. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Elizabeth Hankins of San Antonio.
