

On June 13, 2017, having lived a life of service to family and community, Reverend Joseph McMurry Owen died peacefully at home. He was born July 11, 1922 in Longview, TX, son of Rev. Calvin Percy Owen and Alice McMurry Owen.
Joe Owen graduated from UT Austin and Richmond Theological Seminary. He began his ministry in 1946 as the Assistant Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Huntington, West Virginia, where he met his wife, Jane. They moved to Texas in 1949 and he served as pastor at several Presbyterian churches: First in Mt. Pleasant, St. Luke's in Houston, First Central in Abilene, and Beacon Hill in San Antonio. He also served in various leadership roles in the Presbyterian church. After retiring from Beacon Hill in 1985, he spent his time as interim pastor at various churches and volunteered for the House of Neighborly Service and the San Antonio Literacy Council. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening and studying during his retirement years.
He is survived by his three adult daughters and their husbands, Laine (Sandy), Alice (Sam), and Laura (David); six grandchildren, Chris, Valerie, Josh, Kaitlyn, James and Patrick; three great-granddaughters, Jessica, Mia, Emma; and many nieces and nephews. His wife, Jane Owen, and son, Murry Owen, preceded him in death. The family expresses their gratitude to his long-time caregivers Rosie and Esther, and the staff at Embrace Hospice.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 3:00pm at University Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, TX, with reception following.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to University Presbyterian Church or Mission Presbytery.
