On July 16, 2023, Joseph Girard San Miguel entered peacefully into the arms of our Lord. He was born in San Antonio on March 2, 1944, to Henry San Miguel Sr. and Hortense Girard San Miguel, descendant of one of the original Spanish settlers of San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his dear love of 56 years, Olga Perera San Miguel; daughters, Cynthia (Albert) Salvador, Cherie San Miguel (Karl Thomas), and Christina (Jose) Soto Jr.; grandchildren, Emme, Matthew, Audrey, Miles, and Catalina; and brother, Henry (Connie) Girard San Miguel, Jr.
Joseph attended St. Phillip of Jesus School, Central Catholic High School, University of North Texas for his MBA, and he received both his Bachelor and Ph.D from The University of Texas at Austin. He was a licensed CPA in Texas where he was awarded the Chartered Global Management Accountant Certificate. He was dedicated to teaching MBA and post-graduate students during an academic career that spanned over forty-two years. Joe was a faculty member of the NYU Graduate School of Business, Harvard University Graduate Business School, and the Naval Postgraduate School. Joe’s teaching excellence brought invitations to teach MBA students at Stanford, Dartmouth, UC Davis, the Peter Drucker School at Claremont Graduate School, and INSEAD Singapore. Joe was a financial advisor on national security projects involving several federal agencies and the Department of Defense.
He served on the boards of Central Catholic High School, Homes for Our Troops, and Jenzabar, Inc. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (Honorary Member Award), the American Accounting Association (Life Member Award), The Institute of Management Sciences, the Harvard Business School Club of San Antonio, and the National Association of Corporate Directors. He generously contributed to Central Catholic High School, Homes for Our Troops, and the Texas Public Policy Foundation.
After his retirement from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA, Joe’s days were filled with his favorite activities. He was a very friendly and inquisitive person and enjoyed spreading his light heartedness and humor with everyone he met. He loved to watch the sunrise during morning walks along the coastline from Asilomar to Cannery Row. He had a deep appreciation for all rock and roll music which spanned the decades from the ‘50’s to the present. Dancing to the music of local bands was a favorite pastime, as well as traveling abroad, family vacations, and patriotic endeavors. He cherished times spent with his extended family and especially his five grandchildren. Joe’s role model was his father who despite lacking a formal education, labored hard to provide for his sons with a strong belief in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Joe’s fight is over, the race is finished, and he kept the Faith.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m., Thursday, July 27, 2023, at Porter Loring Mortuary.
