

She was born in Karnes City, Texas on September 17, 1923, and was raised in San Antonio, where she met her husband and later raised her own family.
Josie was active as a leader in Girl Scouts, and also worked closely with her husband Johnnie in his leadership role in the Boy Scouts.
She also participated in many ladies church groups throughout her life.
Those who were privileged to spend any time with Josie will fondly recall her warm smile and easy laugh, as well as her talent for storytelling over coffee and pan de dulce.
Josie was preceded in death by her loving husband of forty-eight years, Johnnie A. Valdez and their son, Johnny R. Valdez.
She is survived by her daughter, Yolanda V. Mata; her daughter-in-law, Gloria T. Valdez; her grandsons, Martin Valdez, Russell Valdez, Jesse J. Mata and John Paul Valdez; her granddaughters, Cheri Scanio and Julie M. Peterson; her great-grandchildren, Cameron, Cade and Colton Valdez, Michael John Valdez, Lauren Nicole Valdez and Jaden Michael Peterson, and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and family.
