Josie Almendarez Bates, a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, tia, and friend, passed peacefully on October 26, 2026, at age 53.
Born on November 22, 1972, Josie brought warmth, love, and light to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
As a devoted and loving mother, Josie’s greatest joy in life was her family. Her favorite color was purple, and she deeply loved Grogu (Baby Yoda) and everything Buc-ee's. She loved many shows, including The Mandalorian, Dancing with the Stars, and Jeopardy, among others. She found simple, genuine joy in spontaneous road trips to Buc-ee’s and always cherished the unforgettable memories made visiting the beach with her children when they were young.
A dedicated, hardworking professional, Josie spent several years at Amazon, where her work ethic and leadership shined as she worked her way up to warehouse manager. She was also incredibly proud to be taking college courses to further her education. Her vibrant spirit, warmth, and laugh filled every room and will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who loved her.
Josie was preceded in death by her parents, Dominga and Jose Almendarez; her sister-in-law, Belinda Almendarez; and her brother-in-law, Jack Garcia.
Her beautiful legacy of love lives on through her cherished children: Roseann Almendarez, Monique Romero, Sandra Marie Bates, and Christopher Bates Jr., whom she shared with her first husband, Christopher Bates; and her adored grandchildren: Noah Granado, Mckinley Daniels, Matthew Granado, Gloria Marie Granado, Alexander Granado, Millie Marie Granado, and Mila Romero.
She is also survived by her loving siblings: Jose Almendarez Jr., Michael Almendarez and his wife Gloria Almendarez, Johnny Almendarez, Elizabeth Almendarez, and Jesse Almendarez; her loving godparents, Daniel and Marta Falcon; her spouse, Rene Gamez; and a large, loving extended family.
All services will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Sunset North Funeral Home, located at 910 N Loop 1604 E, San Antonio, TX 78232.
