Joy V. Johnson

She was born August 21, 1931 in Etoile, Texas near Lufkin, Texas and was the daughter of John Henry and Julia Elizabeth (Roberts) Polk, who were both Ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Joy was the youngest of seven children, four sisters and two brothers. When she was about five years of age, her father was killed in an accident, and thereafter, with little income, Joy's mom struggled to feed the children.

In Joy's late teens she left home to become a student at Southwestern Assemblies of God College in Waxahachie, Texas.

It was there that she met and married Walter "Dub" Jones Sr., a young minister. Together they held evangelistic meetings and pastored several churches in east Texas. Years later they divorced, and she courageously embraced the challenge of raising two boys as a single mom, with no secular training.

However, Joy could play the piano and organ and Alfred Flores of Alamo Music Center in San Antonio hired her to demonstrate their musical instruments. In time she became their top sales person.

Joy was also privileged to play and assist musically at Cornerstone Church, where she was also a member for more than 35 years.

One day she met a successful attorney, Frank D. Johnson, and she began to pray for him. Shortly after he received the Lord Jesus as his Savior, Frank and Joy were married, on May 26, 1978.

They continued serving the Lord at Cornerstone Church until about 1993, when God directed them to assist her eldest son, who pastored Boerne Assembly of God Church. After Franks 'passing' in 2001, Joy continued to faithfully play the organ, contact visitors, and pray for new converts to Christ, until she returned to Cornerstone Church in 2012.

The last several years of her life she resided at Brookdale Senior Living, where before lunch and dinner she would sit at the piano and play gospel songs to the delight of her listeners.

Today, she is playing, singing and joyfully worshiping with her family in that heavenly city, where suffering and sorrows are but distant memories.

Joy is survived by her son, Rev. Walter "Dub" Jones and his wife René B. Jones; and son Dr. Mark Jones and his wife Theresa Jones; step-daughter Donna Kay McKinney, step-daughter Sue Johnson, and step-son Richard Lane Johnson and wife Martha Johnson.

Joy was blessed with two grandsons, three granddaughters, two grandson-in-laws, one step-granddaughter, seven great grandchildren, and ten step-great grandchildren.
