Clara Joyce Barclay Arnold (known only as Joyce since the day she walked into first grade and told them that was her name) was born on December 3, 1932, in the San Joaquin Valley of central California to Edwin and Dorothy Barclay. She was raised there with her older brother, Don and younger sister, Jan. She attended Fresno State College and moved to San Jose to teach elementary school. Then, always eager for adventure, she became a flight attendant for United Airlines and moved to New York City. There, she met John Wyman Arnold. They married in 1957 and she began the life of an Army wife, living in places such as France, Okinawa, and Hawaii. After retirement, they enjoyed continuing to travel the world. They were married for 48 years until John’s death in 2006.
Joyce loved to volunteer her time. She was a longtime member of the Assistance League of San Antonio. She served on several committees at The Towers where she lived, and she volunteered at Brooke Army Medical Center. She is preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Dorothy; husband, John; brother, Don; and her grandson, Cody John Zimmerman.
She is survived by her sister, Jan; daughters, Kim, Kristen and Jennifer; grandchildren, Megan, Kayla, Sterling, William, Marc and Emma; and great-grandchildren, Rory, Ashtyn, Gus, Lexie, Cade, and Jynelle.
