Born in Blossom, Texas July 6, 1931 as the first of three children to J.D. and Bess Cheatham.
She was a wonderful daughter and much loved sister to her brother, Doug and sister, Darlene.
As a 9-year-old child, she believed God spoke to her heart to follow His Son Jesus. She shared that belief with her father and was baptized as a sign of her faith in Jesus. As a teenager she met the 'love of her life', Jimmie Heflin and later even though her sites were set on Baylor University she followed Jimmie to Louisiana College, where she attained a degree in Education. Joyce and Jimmy were married on August 13, 1949.
Joyce was supportive of Jimmie as a 'pastor's wife' at several churches including Calvary Baptist, McAllen, Texas and First Baptist Nederland, Texas. Joyce taught Sunday School for 64 years! They were blessed with four children, Linda, Steve, David and Michael, who all know what wonderful, strong, godly parents they were given. After 38 years of marriage, Jimmie passed away and he remained the 'love of her life'! They had made their home in San Antonio where Joyce continued a successful real estate career for over 30 years.
She is preceded in death by husband Jimmie, parents, J.D., Bess and brother Doug Cheatham. She is survived by her sister, Darlene Foster, her children, Linda Turner and husband Glenn, Steve Heflin and wife Tricia, David Heflin and wife Laura, and Michael Heflin and wife Joanna; eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
In a book Joyce prepared for her family, she wrote "I want to live as long as God allows me, but I know how sweet it will be to be with Jimmie and Mom and Dad and Doug and all my loved ones, so don't cry for me."
We celebrate the life of the beautiful and loved Joyce Ann Heflin.
Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. at Mission Burial Park North. Memorial Service will follow at First Baptist Church, 515 McCullough Ave at 4:00 p.m.
