

Joyce L. Johnson, age 88, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2023, in San Antonio. She was born on February 1, 1935 in Volin Township, Yankton County, South Dakota, to parents, Lillie Jensen and Andrew P. Andersen. Joyce attended her first eight grades of school in a one room schoolhouse in rural Hurley, South Dakota. She then attended Parker High School in Parker, South Dakota, and graduated with the Class of 1954.
Upon her graduation from high school, Joyce worked as a bookkeeper and clerk at the K&K Store in Viborg, South Dakota. On January 8, 1956, Joyce married Lyle Ellius Johnson at the First Baptist Church in Parker, South Dakota. They relocated to California, and Joyce worked as a teller at the Azusa Valley Savings Bank from 1956 to 1962. They went on to live and work in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Texas.
Joyce enjoyed bowling, square dancing, working on family photo albums, exercise class and volunteering at church and the Agape Ministry. She loved spending time with and attending the events of her 8 grandchildren (Joe Lopez, Matthew Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Austin Marchant, Emme Johnson, Joshua Marchant, Parker Johnson, and Ashley Marchant). Joyce and Lyle were both active members of the Windcrest United Methodist Church since their move to Texas in 1981. They were blessed to have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2021 before Lyle’s passing.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Lyle, her parents, her brothers Merle, Peter, Ray, Harlan, LeRoy and Ralph, and her sister Helen Sherard. Joyce is survived by her sister Phyllis Goosen; children, Bradley Johnson and wife Kelly, Jolene Marchant and husband Kevin, and Brett Johnson and wife Norma Jean; 8 grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
FUNERAL SERVICESATURDAY, APRIL 15, 20232:00 P.M.WINDCREST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Rev. Jim McClain will officiate. Pallbearers will be Joe Lopez, Matthew Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Austin Marchant, Joshua Marchant, and Parker Johnson. Honorary pallbearers are Emme Johnson and Ashley Marchant.
The family would like to invite friends and relatives to gather in the fellowship hall of the church immediately after the service for a reception.
A private interment will take place at a later date in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Agape Ministry.
