Juan Chano Dominguez, Age 91, was called to be with the Lord on May 13, 2015. He was born on March 15, 1924 in Corpus Christi, TX. to the late Juan Dominguez, Sr. and Juanita Chano Dominguez. He graduated from Roy Miller High School and worked many jobs. He started with working on dairy farms and picking cotton with his brothers to support his family of twelve siblings.
In 1943, he was drafted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the signal corp, as a radar operator stationed in California. He volunteered for a reassignment to the 9th Infantry Division (the Old Reliables) and fought in the Rhineland Campaign in Europe. Again, he volunteered to fire the infamous B.A.R machine gun for his unit at the Bridge at Remagen. The allies gained their first bridgehead on the Rhine for their Northern attack. On his birthday he was captured by the German Army and held as a POW until the end of the war. He was on board an unmarked filthy prison train traveling north into Germany. After attacks from P-47 aircrafts, the German soldiers fled the train. The PWs made a human sign in a desperate attempt to warn off attacking U.S. dive bombers. The attacks ceased after recognizing the sign but some PWs were killed and wounded from earlier attacks.
He returned home and was employed at NAS, C.C. TX. as an apprentice electrician. He married the late Elida Garza Dominguez, who he had met while on leave previously, in Cotulla, TX. in 1947 and started a family. He transferred to Kelley AFB, in San Antonio, TX and worked in the electronic field as an integrated systems analysis. After 36 years of work, he retired from civil service. His interests were T.V. repairs and watching sports, especially baseball, as he coached CYO and Little League teams. He was a very passionate person regarding human rights and veterans’ issues. He gave of his time to organizations in San Antonio, serving on the Board of Directors. He was a loving and caring grandfather who seemed very happy around his grandchildren and will be truly missed.
He is preceded in death by: his parents, wife: Elida G. Dominguez, Sisters: Magdalena Gonzales, Maria Lupe Godoy, Katie Miranda, Virginia Cantu, Nicolasa Barrientes and Adela Flores; Brothers: Ramon Dominguez, Robert Dominguez, and Arnold Dominguez.
