Juanita Curiel Perez, 70, of San Antonio, passed away on April 11, 2020.

Juanita, or Janie as she was known to many, was born to Anastacio and Guadalupe Curiel on August 18, 1949, in Meadow, Texas. She graduated from nursing school in 1978 and was a Registered Nurse until she retired in 2012.

She married Arturo Lee Perez on November 17, 1969, and they were married for 50 years. She is survived by her husband Arturo, her two children, Juan Jose Perez (and Ana Laura Perez) and Angelica Perez Barrera (and Gustavo Barrera Jr.), two grandsons, Alejandro Jose and Andres Joaquin, and three granddaughters, Elena Natalie, Catalina Teresa, and Guadalupe Lucia. She is also survived by her siblings Matilde, Jose, Ruben, and Silvia. She was preceded in death by her loving parents Anastacio and Guadalupe and her beloved brothers Eliseo and Roberto.

Juanita was a dedicated and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, nurse, friend, and most importantly, servant of God. As a strong, loving matriarch, she led her family with kindness and grace, always striving to bring whatever aid or comfort to those she loved. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of service in health care and in the Church.

A Rosary will be held on April 10, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Anthony Mary Claret Catholic Church, followed by the funeral Mass at 2:00 p.m. A private burial will take place at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery on April 12. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Janie’s Mission, the foundation started by her children that is dedicated to education and helping those in economic need. The staff at Elrod Elementary would like to extend our deepest condolences on the loss of such a beautiful woman. The staff at Elrod always looked forward to seeing Mrs. Perez everyday as she dropped off her granddaughters at school. She always had a kind word to share with us along with her beautiful smile and we will miss her.

My dear Janie, how I miss your beautiful smile, your consoling hugs, and those words of comfort you would always give me... when mijo was alive you would always ask for him and pray for him, you loved him so much; now you have joined him in Heaven . I can picture you embracing him and looking down at us. When I look up into heaven and feel the breeze I can almost hear you and mijo whispering to me ... “everything is going to be okay. We are both praying for you my dear sister.” Cuñado, Angelica, and JJ, I love you.

I have so many memories I could share about the impact that Janie had on my life. Her in the kitchen at the Geronimo Forest house, smiling while she listened to Angelica and I study and talk about boys. Janie coming to every single celebration and event- my wedding and bridal shower, then baby showers, and children's birthday parties. Janie and Art driving Angelica and I home after play practice or basketball practice. Janie such an example of grace, joy, generosity, calm, patience- and just making everyone that she encountered feel like family.

Janie was the most loving and caring person I had the pleasure of knowing for so many years. She was generous and would give you the clothes of her back if you needed it. She was an angel . Always happy and laughing. Blessings and prayers for the Perez family. She loved dancing especially with her brother Robert. You will be missed.

My Tia Janie was a very beautiful soul, always put your needs before her own. Tia Janie instilled in me that anything is possible with your trust in God. I always remember telling my children how she over came all odds. Tia Janie grew up in an old poor house, struggled, and became a Nurse, her passion, her mission to help others. Tia Janie was so rich invested in her Catholic beliefs, in our Hispanic culture but most importantly her faith on our Lord, Jesus Christ. I will always envision her smile and telling me “mijo everything will be ok, I will pray for you”. Tia Janie, I love you so much and miss you dearly. Please watch over our loved ones.
