

Karl was born in Durham, North Carolina on July 28, 1929, and moved to Decatur, Alabama at age 7. He graduated High School in 1947 and served as a pharmacist in the U.S. Army for 21 years, retiring in 1968.
He married his bride of 62 years, Avis Schmidtke of Northfield, Minnesota on June 30, 1956. The Army would take them to live in El Paso, Texas, Virginia, Japan and San Antonio, Texas.
After the Army, Karl worked for the Texas Pharmaceutical Company in San Antonio, and then as a Civil Servant for the Army, teaching pharmaceutics to soldiers at the Academy of Health Sciences at Fort Sam Houston for 20 years.
Karl greatly enjoyed baseball, playing for several Army teams, and serving as an umpire for baseball and softball games for many years. He also served in church as an usher and in several leadership positions. He was very active in the Roosevelt High School band parents association for 5 years. And Karl loved Polka and Country dancing.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother. He is survived by wife Avis Mittwede, son, Richard and wife Marcia Mittwede, and daughter, Robin Mittwede, nephew Mark and wife Cindy, niece Vickie and husband Steve.
A man of great faithfulness and reliability, a good work ethic, a consistent provider, and sometimes less-than-appropriate sense of humor, he is deeply missed.
