

Karleen Marietta "Kay" (Gambino) Sims, a devoted wife of 65 years, amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend; the beacon of love and generosity passed away peacefully at her home in San Antonio on October 28, 2024, at the age of 89. She was born on March 18, 1935 at Fort Sam Houston Station Hospital. Kay's life was a testament to her kindness, nurturing spirit, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Kay was a lifelong caregiver and knew from an early age she wanted to be a nurse. She graduated from St. Teresa's Academy and then studied at Seton Nursing School becoming a Registered Nurse. Her career spanned over 45yrs, with 25yrs at the Nix Hospital in Surgery and Recovery, and 20yrs at Methodist Plaza Day Surgery. Throughout her career, Kay touched the lives of countless individuals with her compassionate care and warm presence, making lifelong friendships along the way.
Her love story with Robert "Bob" Sims was one for the ages. Together, they built a life filled with joy, laughter, and an ever-growing family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Agnes Gambino and is survived by her beloved husband, Bob; her children, Mary (Don) Preecs, Janet (Larry) Nitsche, and Paul (Vickie) Sims; grandchildren, Brett (Chelsea) Sims, Kaytlyn (Brett) Brewer, Jacob Preecs, Oliver Preecs, Daryl (Graham) Steely, Terra Gordon, Derrick Nitsche, Drew Nitsche; and great-grandchildren, Theodore "Teddy", Scout, Collins, and Nora. Kay cherished her family and leaves them with a legacy of love that will endure for generations.
Kay's interests reached far beyond her professional life. She had a passion for traveling, exploring new places, and experiencing different cultures. Her love for cooking and baking was not just a hobby, but a way to bring people together, creating lasting memories around the dinner table. She dedicated time to charity work, always seeking to give back to the community as she generously gave her time and talents to those less fortunate. She was a member of the Sultanas de Bejar and St. Monica's Guild. Moreover, her devotion to God never wavered and she proudly proclaimed her faith. Kay’s lifetime of actions echoing the words of St. Francis of Assisi: "For it is in giving that we receive."
Those who knew Kay would describe her as loving, generous, kind, and at the same time, funny and feisty. Her larger than life personality and smile warmed your heart. She had a heart that knew no bounds and a spirit that lifted those around her. Even as she faced the challenges of ALS, her resilience and grace were an inspiration to all. Sincere gratitude to her amazing group of caregivers - Stephanie, Ali, Rhonda, Danielle and Joel.
Kay's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. However, her spirit will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched and through the beautiful memories she created with her family and friends.
As we say farewell, we celebrate a life beautifully lived. Her journey on earth may have ended, but her story will never be forgotten. Kay's legacy will continue to shine brightly as a guiding light for all who were blessed to be a part of her remarkable life.
