After she graduated from High School in her hometown of Bath, NC she often sang on the local radio station and was named Miss Beaufort County for the North Carolina beauty pageant. War broke out in the U.S. before she was able to compete for the Miss North Carolina Crown. During World War II she worked at the Norfolk, Virginia Naval Base where she met and married her husband Elton. After the war they moved back to her husband’s hometown of San Antonio. She was an accomplished seamstress and made beautiful clothes for all her children. Her days were spent sewing and cooking and running a growing household. She loved to sing with her husband playing the piano and her children enjoying some of her favorite songs. “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” was a particular favorite.
In her 50’s she attended St. Mary’s University and received a certificate of Interior Design. She later did volunteer work at Holy Spirit Catholic Church where she was a parishioner. She was a member of The Catholic Women’s Council of San Antonio and travelled to Canada as a representative of the SA chapter for an international CWC convention. She loved to dance and was a member of SCOTS a singles catholic organization that had monthly socials where she could show off her dancing skills. She was still dancing at her grandchildren’s weddings well into her 90’s.
She will be missed by her family and friends, but we know she is singing and dancing with all her loved ones who preceded her into heaven.
Due to Covid the family will be having a private service.
