Kathryn “Jane” Hitt, 84, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on May 30, 2025, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Jane was born in Longview, Texas to Albert and Mary Kathryn Ames. She is preceded in death by her husband Sammy Joe Hitt, her parents, and her brother William Ames, and sister, Mary Ann Pennington. She is survived by daughter, Janice Hampton of Round Rock, Texas; daughter, Mary and son-in-law Bruce Forey of San Antonio, Texas; granddaughter, Bethany Kuwitzky, and fiancé Zach Schilly of Lubbock, Texas; grandson Jake and wife Taryn Forey of Northport, Alabama; and grandson Zane Forey of San Antonio, Texas, as well as many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Jane was a lifelong Texan, born and raised in Longview in 1941 and graduating from Pine Tree Highschool. She graduated from Texas Women’s University in Denton in 1963 and moved to Slaton to become a schoolteacher. In Slaton, Jane met and married Sammy Joe Hitt, raised two daughters, taught 4th grade and remedial reading for 30 years and was a loyal and dedicated member of the Slaton United Methodist Church. Jane and Sammy were married for 51 years until his death in 2016.
Jane was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, who was adored by her family and made sure they all felt her love. She brought so much joy to others, had a quirky sense of humor and a great laugh and loved spending time visiting with family and friends. She was also a great friend to all she encountered and loved helping people. Jane loved nature and was an avid amateur bird watcher. She also loved dogs and likely has no less than five dogs following her around heaven. Most of all, Jane loved being a grandmother and never stopped teaching and encouraging children, especially when it came to reading. Last, but certainly not least, Jane was a devout Christian. She will be greatly missed, more than words can describe.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, from 6pm – 8pm at Sunset Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held the next day Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 9:00 am at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church in the Garden Chapel, where she was a member since moving to San Antonio in 2007. Interment to follow at 10:30am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
The family suggest memorials be made to the Alamo Heights United Methodist Church flower ministry, which recycles after flowers into bouquets for the homebound.
