Kenneth John Schueler left us unexpectedly the evening of August 5th, 2025 at 88 years of age. We find comfort in knowing he is reunited in heaven with his son, John, his parents, and all those that he loved that went before him. He will be deeply missed by Margot Schueler, his wife of 66 years; his children, Nancy and Dave; their spouses, Michelle, Micki, and Tony; and his 5 grandchildren, Meghan, Jack, Margot, Zack, and Dylan. The funeral will take place at Holy Trinity Catholic church (San Antonio, TX) on Wednesday, August 13th, 2025 at 10 AM, followed immediately by a celebration of life at Sunset North Funeral Home.
Ken was born an only child to John William Schueler and Margaret Ziolkowski on October 1st, 1936 in Buffalo, NY, and raised in the small town of Silver Springs, NY, where everyone knew everyone. He attended Canisius College and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting in 1958, after which he completed training for the Army Reserves, serving for 6 years. He began working at Crawford and Company, an independent insurance adjusting company, in 1958 after graduation from college and retired in 1998 as Vice President of Claims - Midwest Region after 40 years with the company. While he led an impressive life, his biggest love and joy was right beside him since the first day of first grade when he stood out as the best dressed in class and made an impression on a certain third grader, Margot Chastek. The two grew up together and married on May 16th, 1959. Margot and Ken celebrated 66 years of marriage this past May. Due to job advancements, they lived an amazing life together in several different cities, including Cleveland, OH, Lima, OH and Rockford, IL, primarily raising their family in Saginaw, Michigan. He finished out his career in the Chicago Regional office and lived in Evansville and Fishers, IN where John and his family lived before eventually settling in San Antonio, TX six years ago to be closer to their daughter, Nancy and her family.
Ken loved family. It didn’t matter if you were one of his own 3 children or one of their spouses, you were loved just the same. That’s just who he was. His children, Nancy, John, and Dave were his world. Whether coaching them in hockey as kids or supporting them in their professional lives, he was always there for them and so proud of each of them. He bled maize and blue, having put his 3 kids through college at the University of Michigan. Ken also loved his 5 grandchildren immensely, whether he was fishing or golfing or just hanging out with them whenever he could. He loved hockey and was a longtime youth coach and referee for the Greater Saginaw Amateur Hockey Association and was one of the longest serving minor officials in the International Hockey League, having served with the Saginaw Gears and the Chicago Wolves before finishing with the Indianapolis Fuel of the East Coast Hockey League. He was a Cubs fan and didn’t miss a game on TV if he could help it. He still played golf at almost 89 years of age. He worked as a golf starter in St. Charles, IL after retiring and volunteered for PGA events in Chicago, Indianapolis and San Antonio. For many years he owned a boat named after his kids, the JoNaDa, and enjoyed fishing the Great Lakes and inland lakes of Michigan.
Ken had the art of storytelling down to a science. He could recall facts and details and tell a story like no other, and don’t you dare try to interrupt him or interject. It was a futile attempt as he would stay right on track. When Ken would laugh, it was real and he would get a special smirk on his face and twinkle in his eyes. He made friends wherever he went and enjoyed being the bartender extraordinaire for the Mix and Mingle hours at his apartment complex. During Covid he enjoyed delivering drinks to the residents’ apartments when they couldn’t gather socially. He was an active member of the apartment Garden Club. He made friends easily and kept them for life. He still maintained these friendships dating back to childhood, college, and all the places he worked and lived to this day.
Our family feels fortunate to have all gathered three weekends ago to celebrate Margot’s 90th birthday and thought we’d be doing so again a year from now to celebrate Ken’s. Instead, we will be celebrating his life and all that he meant to each of us. Rest in peace, Ken. We love you!
