Only an almighty Creator with eternal purpose and intention would choose to weave the beautiful quilt of a person with the genius spirit of Landon Wren Powell. Only a loving and compassionate heavenly Father would choose to write, edit and rewrite his story with seasons of redemption and grace, then call him Home abruptly, when the torment of the enemy was too unbearable to allow.
Born in Denver, Colorado, but landing in Texas as soon as he could, Landon lived and grew up in Pampa, Texas from the time he was less than 2 months old. His older sister, Gabrielle, did her best to co-parent, but learned from a very early age that Landon saw life from his own perspective, preferred to learn it his own and tended to do things his own way. She learned to love this about her brother and when he was old enough to reciprocate, their first and best-of-all friendship was forged for life, stretched and reshaped, but never to be broken.
Landon heard about Jesus from the crib and from the beginning asked the questions that made Sunday school teachers wonder how best to answer and how much to explain. His heart was captivated by a friend willing to die unconditionally for him and it was only a matter of time before he begged to seal their friendship publicly, his parents finally conceding and celebrating his baptism at 6 years old. His friendship with Jesus grew in conviction and purpose over the years and like his sister's, was also never to be broken. And like the companionship he felt in Jesus, Landon mirrored the marrow of unreciprocated love: a friend with a nauseating ability to extend grace, an ally for "the least of these."
He had a tenacious will and a fearless heart which gave his parents no small case of heartburn, but proved to be the God-breathed temperament Landon relied upon to face and endure the many unforeseen obstacles and challenges life would bring. Musically, he was hungry, given a driving brilliance for playing guitar at the tender age of 6. His left-handed legion of acoustic and electric strings would become his lifelong source of creative pursuits, reliable comrades and his sources of solace. Academically he excelled, especially gifted in math and science. Again dipping into his divine purpose, Landon wanted to one day use these gifts to minister to others who battled against themselves, as he did with his Schizoaffective brain. Because of his mastery of school studies, Landon's energy reserve frequently gave birth to creative bursts of comedy and entertainment, which both exasperated his teachers and delighted his classmates. He inspired with his intellect and was adored for his sense of humor, his sense of raw authenticity.
His father knew Landon's soul like a brother's and his mother entwined his essence from the womb he was knit. Landon would always know his parents pursued him, lights-out, love-overriding law. His family was a force field, his family his champions for the man Landon truly was. Outside of his inner circle of cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, few people would truly understand Landon. Uniqueness that puzzled, unrepentant peculiarity. But those who did were arrested by what God was doing and what He will continue to do with Landon's legacy of a story. Even still He is Good.
