He was an amazing man. Not just because he was our earthly father, but because he was so loved and respected by so many people from all walks of life. He was not a teacher, but his exemplary ways gave presence. He taught as he lived with a strong moral character and a keen sense of self.
November 1935. Larry Gene Coker began his life in a small Kansas town, Osawatomie, the first son of Lucille and Frank Coker, and 8 years later big brother to their 2nd son, Tom. He was an excellent student, played basketball and tennis, and served as Sr. Class President and Valedictorian. Larry also led the local DeMolay chapter as Master Counselor. Leadership roles continued at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. He was a student body leader on campus and attended the Wesley Foundation (Campus Ministry) where he met and married his wife of 65 years, Pauline Lasley.
He transferred to Kansas University and joined ROTC, earned a business degree, and served his country as an Army Reservist for over 30 years while managing a small business (Coker's Store), and raising three children (Pam, Shelly, and Larry, Jr.) with Pauline. He went on to complete a MA degree, a Command and General Staff graduate degree, and he graduated from the U.S. Army War College.
When his children needed parental guidance, Pauline would tell them, “Your Father says...” and would then give the direction from the spiritual man they loved and followed the most.
Throughout the years he was affectionately known by numerous names: "Mr. C" by his son's friends, President Coker by fellow members of the School Board, “The Bird Colonel” by his daughter's college friends, and “GP” by his grandkids.
That was his most beloved role. He and Pauline took the title of #1 Fans and followed their grandkids to sporting events all over the U.S.
In mid-life, encouraged by Pauline, he applied and was selected to be the Deputy Commander of the 90th ARCOM in San Antonio, Texas. He served in that role as a full Colonel for 7 years, then retired from active duty in 1987 and began his Civil Service command at the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) for 12 years and retired from Civil Service in 1999.
Larry was a member of AHUMC and leaves 2 daughters, Pam Green and Shelly Coker, and one son, Larry Coker, Jr., (Marcia). He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
His love and guidance will forever be in our hearts.
Donations to honor Larry's life can be made to St. Judes Hospital, the San Antonio Food Bank, or AHUMC.
A Committal Service will be held on Monday, March 2, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
