April 5, 1947 to November 22, 2025
Larry Moore (78) stepped into heaven in the early hours of November 22, 2025, trusting his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He passed away peacefully at his home in San Antonio, TX, after a characteristically determined battle with lung cancer.
Larry adored Linda, nee Patteson, his wife of 20 years. He called their years together the best of his life. They met as next-door neighbors and enjoyed a close friendship for 25 years until they finally figured out what their friends already knew: they were meant to be together. The adventuresome couple enjoyed wonderful travels, both near and far, and accompanied each other through the joys and challenges of life.
Larry and Linda also shared a passion for beauty – especially flowers. Larry inherited his love of gardening from his mother. He first tended a garden alongside his mom, then he and Linda gardened together, enjoying many conversations about the types and placement of their plantings. Larry worked tirelessly in his yard, with the payoff of a bounty of seasonal blooms in colors that delighted the eye and scent-filled gardenia blooms that were shared with his neighbors. He was a generous gift-giver, and one would frequently find a gorgeous bouquet being delivered to Linda to celebrate a special occasion or “just because.”
As a leader, Larry was steady and confident. He let his actions speak for themselves – he didn’t need to have the loudest voice or boast about his accomplishments. He was willing to do the right thing, even when it wasn’t popular. He stepped in when leadership was needed, whether on a team, at work, or in the neighborhood.
During his lengthy banking career, he served as a “Community Banker” in the truest sense of the role. Larry’s success was measured by the satisfaction gained in strengthening the business fabric of our community. Wanting to leave his customers and projects on a strong footing, he continued his career until age 75!
Larry had a wry sense of humor and enjoyed teasing his friends with such a straight face that they weren’t sure he was joking until they noticed the twinkle in his eye. He was an appreciative man who was quick to say thank you. A neighbor and fellow HOA officer described Larry as a “good and decent man” – a fitting description.
On April 5, 1947, Larry was born into a military family, beginning with his birth at a military hospital in El Paso, Texas. His father, Ballinger “BB” Moore, Sr., his mother, Ivis, nee McLaurin, his brother Skip, and Larry relocated frequently throughout Larry’s childhood. As a “Military Brat,” Larry wrote his early life story describing his family’s many moves: His first move was at the age of two to Denver, CO, and on to Stephenville, Newfoundland at age three, followed by Pittsburgh, PA at age six, and to Washington, D.C. at age seven. Subsequently, they lived in Montgomery, AL, back to Washington, D.C., Warner-Robins, GA, Goose Bay, Labrador, Omaha, NE, and Ft Worth, TX. Whew!
From his school years on, Larry excelled as a leader and athlete. Larry played baseball in high school; he was the Team Captain and played shortstop. He was the football quarterback and also lettered in basketball. At the Marion Military Academy in Marion, Alabama, Larry was a sergeant of the color guard and graduated with honors. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was active in the Air Force ROTC program.
Larry started college at the US Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colorado Springs, CO. He was the No. 2 quarterback, and on defense, he was the Monster Man of the football team. Larry was also the field goal kicker and extra point man. As a 1970 Texas A&M graduate, Larry was a very (very!) proud Aggie and member of the Corps of Cadets – GATOR 2.
Larry was also an unashamed patriot; he loved our country and the people who served it. He and his brother Skip shared an extremely close childhood bond that continued until Skip’s passing just a few weeks before Larry’s. He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Larry is survived by his loving wife Linda; nieces Victoria (Tori) Moore of San Antonio and Shannon Lawhorn, husband Stephen of Elkhart, TX, and their children Jocelyn, Breanna, husband Jake, Paige, and Cameron; and cousins Sara and Kathy Rider of Austin, TX. For many years, Larry enjoyed a special relationship with Chris and Ben Blanton, who were like sons to him. Larry loved Linda’s family as his own, from which he is survived by nephew Michael Patteson, wife Heather of San Antonio, TX, and their children Grayson, Sullivan (“Sully”), Emma, Saige, and Hailey; niece Jennifer Moses, husband Preston of Lockhart, TX, their children Jaelynn, Paisley, and Piper. Larry’s close friends and colleagues will miss him dearly, including Greg Hennings, Fred Whitten, Mitch Weidenbach, Johnny Farquhar, Bob Smith, Tim Sanford, Rick Tatum, Wes Hayes, and many others.
Larry’s Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 1:00 PM in the Chapel at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, TX 78218.
