Born and raised in Von Ormy, Texas Lawrence attended Von Ormy Elementary School, which was right across the train track from the very house he was born in, and 99 1/2 years later passed away in.
He then attended Somerset High School where he graduated from, in the 11th grade. He was one of the top students (especially in math) in his class of 46 students.
Due to his mother, Maria Quintana passing away when he was only 13 years old, with the help of his Grandmother Juliana, he helped raise his 4 younger siblings. When he became of age, Lawrence went to work civil service at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas where he retired from after 38 years. While at KAFB he was drafted into the military service (Army Air Corps) and had an opportunity to travel to far away places. One of his favorites that he would always talk about was when he went to Australia. Oh did he have some amazing stories.
He became a WWII Veteran as a result of all that traveling while in the military. Upon arrival back home he continued working on Base at “Kelly Field” (formerly Kelly Air Force Base) where he met so many people of whom some became lifelong friends/buddies, some of whom his children referred to as “uncles”.
Mid 20’s Lawrence met the Love of his life, Oralia Flores. Lawrence was an amazing dancer, and he met this beauty at a local dance, who would later become his wife in 1951. They were married for 63 years and raised 8 amazing children who were blessed with many wonderful characteristics from the loving couple.
Lawrence was an amazing: husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, & great great grandfather. He was also a well loved uncle to so many nieces, nephews, & to many more children of extended families. He was so loved by many & he always had to make people laugh with his great sense of humor. Even during his last days & hours he still had that great sense of humor.
Longevity is definitely in his bloodline, as his Aunt, who we referred to as “Tia Maggè” lived to be 104 years old.
After 99 1/2 years old Lawrence would say that he was ready to go home to be with God our Father, Oralia his loving wife of 63 years, & his first son LarryBoy who was his right hand man. He said it was extremely difficult losing one of your children before dying yourself. Lawrence was greatly appreciated by so many as he was always very supportive of all his children & grandchildren. He was definitely a “Pillar” of the Von Ormy & surrounding community. He also was active, along with his wife Oralia in the Parents Club of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Von Ormy.
He coached some of the local women in softball which included 3 of his own daughters on teams in the CYO league. He was assisted by Coach Joe Castro who together had some strong competitive teams.
In closing, Lawrence asked to please recognize his cousin Mary Louise Castro for all of her support & assistance in organizing his “Celebration of Life” service, as she did for his loving wife Oralia, & for so so many others that have passed on. He says Thank You Mary!!!
