Grandpa Larry was as smart and fit as anyone up to minutes before he left us. It was an amazing thing - no stress, no pain...a well-deserved gift for an honorable and loving man. He was baptized as a Methodist as an infant, graduated from Wawatosa High School, and was drafted into the Army at age 18 in 1942. Larry was in the 2nd wave at Omaha Beach in Normandy, fought his way through 5 countries to Berlin where, after the armistice, he oversaw Hitler's private beer garden/swimming pool until the US sent the single men home in 1945. He was very pleased that he didn't have to go to the Pacific Theater, as expected, because of Japan's surrender.
Then he met and married the vivacious Margaret - his friend and lover for 70+ years. What a couple...constantly teasing one another all the while relying on each other.
Larry was a journeyman printer after the war then bought the publishing company in Milwaukee which he operated until his retirement. He and Margaret toured the country in their motorhome for years while home-based in San Antonio near his daughter, Donna. After their nomadic days, Larry and Margaret looked after their Texas grandchildren and great grandchildren in their San Antonio home. He said he was happiest when he was surrounded by his children. Larry and Margaret both survived cancer in their middle age. Margaret passed away in 2015 ... Larry a year later.
He is survived by his children Thomas (Kiomi) Schneeweiss, Donna (Fred) Mengden, and Steven (Mary) Staudy; 10 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren ...plus a slew of Mengden step grand and great grandchildren. Donna describes him as a quiet, balanced, supportive, rock-solid-dependable Dad. All who were lucky enough to know this man, loved him and will miss him. He's left his mark on all of us.
There will not be any memorial services. Larry Staudy will be interred at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors on Friday, December 23rd, at 10AM CST - friends and family are welcome.
