I regret I never met Lee in the flesh.  We "howdyed,  but never shook"!    He contacted me to write my range insurance, after my former agent, Joe Finger passed away.  I was taken by Lee's kindness and willingness, to assist me, without regard to simple financial gain.  He told me, several weeks ago, that he would be away, having heart surgery. Deepest sympathy to Lee's family. I shared news of his passing in the McHi Class of 65's Facebook group. So many people in our class had such wonderful memories of Lee and everyone who knew him remember him as being a kind and gentle man. Rest in peace, Lee.

It saddens me greatly to see the passing of this  man. Greatly admired by those of us who worked alongside him he was highly respected and to many like me a he shared his friendship our way. Talking with Lee was always a Joy. I will miss his detailed data and discussions concerning early South Texas History, Crop insurance, beautiful Peach Crops in Central Texas, his military task, and his various hobbies.  I genuinely believe he enjoyed crop insurance writing because of his love for Agriculture and the Friendship of the many farmers and ranchers he assisted.  During the years we lived in Friendswood, Lee facilitated fishing and hunting for our respective sons.  Although He and I never discussed the importance of being good examples for our children, we many years later learned about our individual roles in facilitating that in a character-building manner for our sons who still are of Friends and now brother in laws. I will miss Lee’s quite wide smile and firm yet gentle and honestly welcome handshake he always greeted me with.

As an Underwriter with Rain and Hail LLC, I had the pleasure of working with Lee for many years. He was a personal favorite agent of mine. Lee knew the Crop Insurance Program well. Working with him to resolve situations to make sure his customers got  the very  best coverage and service was a joy.  The day he passed, Earth lost a bright light and Heaven gained a Saint. I first met Mr. Johnson in 1990 when Travis and I became friends. In the thirty years of knowing him, he served as an example of how a Christ-following man should live. His work ethic was unwavering, as was his love for nature. Fishing with him wasn’t just a pleasurable outing; it was having a seat at a masterclass. He was so patient as he taught me how to tie and cast a line to land a redfish – and bless him, as I was a rather slow learner. I remember his encouraging words after a football game, or a warm welcome when I would visit Trav. I fondly recall his enormous love for his family. Rarely did I ever hear Mr. Johnson call Travis by his name – rather it was “Bubba.” It wasn’t the nickname that stood out, but the affection he used when he said it. You knew there was an extraordinary love behind the word. You’d hear and sense such enormous love when he spoke with and of Mrs. Johnson and Kristan as well – his ladies meant so much. Above all, I admired his walk with Christ. If you knew him, you had to observe this as well. He unequivocally loved Jesus without a hint of reservation or shame. I’m forever grateful to have known Mr. Johnson, and I’ll always be striving to follow his example. Rest peacefully, faithful servant.

Lee was a kind, gentle giant of a man with a heart of gold and a mischievous twinkle in his eye.  Always ready with something funny to say or an offer of help. His love for his family was always so evident and I pray this truth will help you as you grieve his too early passing. Love. Lea

My deepest condolences to the Johnson family.  I had the pleasure of working with Lee in San Antonio and I remember we all joked about his "Leeisms." He had funny sayings about everything, but the one I most remember ended with "and my wife is a Queen."  It always made me smile. He loved his family dearly and Linda was indeed his everything.  May he rest in peace.

Lee always had this mischievous twinkle in his eye as if he knew something no one else did.  He and Linda were assigned to bring my soon to be a husband to the church for our wedding but they were running late. No knowing, they had a little fender bender.  I was a little concerned but I knew Lee would get him there one way or another - a man of his word.  The love Linda and Lee had for each other was always obvious. Gary & Elsa Cook  Lee was a big man with a big character and great compassion for his family and those around him. He was a man of great integrity and one you could always count on. As new agents in the Valley, Lee and Linda and Elsa and I developed great relationships that resulted in many fond memories over the years. Our prayers are with Linda and her family during this difficult time.

I remember being impressed by Lee when I was in high school in the early 90’s.  He and I were working on the set construction crew for the yearly musical production, and one day a young man we were working with gave Lee and I quite an earful in an angry tirade.  I looked up at Lee, expecting the stern reply that the boy had coming.  However, to my surprise, Lee responded gently and kindly.  His example of grace and patience made a strong impression on me.    I also remember Lee as very generous.  He’d often take Travis and I for a bite at Whataburger, or invite me to join them for dinner when I was around their house. He was quick to offer help when I needed a new sight installed on my bow or when I needed advice on buying a new shotgun or rod.  He welcomed my presence on dove hunts at the plot of land they leased, where He, Travis, and I would spend warm fall afternoons stalking doves, Travis and I hanging on his every word, tale, and morsel of advice.  I didn’t realize it then, but we were listening to a master.  Lee was also a man who appreciated order and took seriously the stewardship of that which he had in his care. I realize now that I liked that about him, and I think it changed me.  I remember cleaning up boats after a fishing day, seeing the way that he would care for his gear, applying WD-40 to the internals of the outboard and washing down the boat using a bucket filled with powdered laundry soap and water.  I still use WD-40 on my outboards the same way, Lee.  I’ll miss you Lee, but I know we will meet again soon.

Lee was a great friend and great neighbor to us for 20 plus years. We love and respect him .Always a ready smile and wave.Because our properties adjoined ,we shared  many large and small projects over the years. His word was his bond. Trust was his trademark. He is a true hero.How many people in life do you know that  were awarded three Purple  Hearts in war ? If you were in need he was always there with Linda to help. His love for Linda and pride in his children and grandchildren were unmatched .Words cannot convey his big heart and love for the outdoors. We have lost a true hero and the void cannot be filled.  We trust our Lord used a big pair of arms to welcome him to heaven. Our thoughts  and support always to his beloved Linda and loving family to sustain them in his memory of devotion to them. Lee is larger than life and will always be remembered as a strong, brave and compassionate man.  We will meet again in an eternal reunion in heaven.

I worked with Lee as a Manager with SF  from 1985 thru 1995. Then went back to agency and he was my manager in San Marcos . Lee gave me one of the greatest gifts that anyone could have given me.  He gave me an opportunity to work as one of his State Farm agents when he was a field executive.  I could never thank him enough for taking the chance on me and impacting my life like he did.  He always fought for me and truly cared.  I have been blessed greatly by him being a part of my life.  He will be missed.

I’ll never forget the first time I met Lee. He was kind, funny and a pleasure to be around. Lee was a good man ...the best! Many times Lee told me that everyone looks at the world through their own knothole.  Many times Lee looked through his knothole to the Lord and it was obvious to me what he was doing.

I only met Lee a few times in the years I have volunteered alongside Linda but I know the Godly man that he is. I heard it in the way she spoke of her beloved Lee. In the way she deeply loves all those she encounters; sharing Christ's love with them all. It is always the most important aspect of her interactions. So, I know it was always in the forefront of their relationship.  My heart breaks for your loss, although we know Lee is at perfect comfort and peace in the loving presence of our Heavenly Father.

So many memories come to mind of a man who was a second father to me.   He was ever-present in our lives during those high school and college years. He gave us an example of what to look for in a good husband.  I often retell the story of the first time he took Mrs. Johnson hunting.   I’ll never be able to watch “Jeremiah Johnson” without thinking of him.  And for the rest of my life, whenever I drive into any town, I will say, “Welcome to (Friendswood), Texas  Home of the Brave Land of the free Public water supply approved The Mayor welcomes you Come worship with us on Sunday”  My love to the Johnson family.  His goodness and strength lives on in all of you.    Sending hugs and prayers.   Eternal rest  grant unto him, O Lord, and let your perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.  Amen.
