Leland Lester Schneider was born on September 8, 1924, in Cibolo, Texas, and passed away on September 24, 2011, at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Pearl (Kopplin) Schneider, and by Kay, his first wife of 60 years. Leland is survived by his wife Suzanne of Oklahoma City; a daughter Sandra Boros and her husband Tony of Princeton, Indiana; a grandson Darrell Leland Kerr and a great grandson Marc Kerr, both of Houston, Texas. Survivors also include sister-in-law Kathryn and her husband Bill Baker of Oklahoma City; nephews Jerry Sylvester and family of Centerville, Texas, Dennie Shupert and family of San Antonio, Allen Baker and wife Janet of Pass Christian, Mississippi; niece Suzie Kempf and her husband Mike and their three children of San Antonio. Leland grew up in San Antonio; and after graduating from Brackenridge High School in 1942, he and two of his close friends enlisted in the Merchant Marines. Although he did not talk much about it, Leland was very proud of his service to his country, even though it was cut short because of an injury. Leland was then employed by Civil Service to work at Kelly Air Force Base where he earned many citations and awards during his 30-year career.
Leland attended Windcrest United Methodist Church in San Antonio and May Avenue United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. The family wishes to thank Leland's friends in Windcrest neighborhood for their support and kindness during the past years and his more recent acquaintances in Oklahoma City for their friendship. They wish to extend a special "thank you" to Mrs. Johnny Miller for her undying friendship and caring. A special thanks and sincere appreciation go to the doctors and nurses in the Critical Care Unit at Deaconess. In addition to his family, Leland leaves behind many, many friends. He was a fine and decent man, generous to a fault, with a heart as big as Texas. Always smiling and pleasant, he had kind words for anyone he met, and he delighted in spoiling his dogs by giving them ice cream every afternoon. Visitation will start at 9:00 a.m. with funeral services to take place at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mark Dankof officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. 'HOME IS THE SAILOR FROM THE SEA.' Condolences may be offered at www.sunsetfuneralhomesa.com.
