LeRoy met and married Virginia T. Monteleone on May 14, 1953. Last year they celebrated 67 years of marriage.
Four days before his 18th birthday, LeRoy joined the Marines. He was trained at Parris Island, SC, boot camp and then served in the Pacific as a member of the 4th Marine Division until the end of WWII. Semper Fi! LeRoy subsequently joined the Army and Air Force, serving 20 years as active duty military. He was a civil service photographer at Ft. Sam Houston Army Base until retirement. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Marines never left him, as friends and family will attest.
Over the years LeRoy won awards as both a photographer and artist. LeRoy enjoyed a good game of cards, chatting with other veterans about their military experiences, sending homemade postcards to friends, and collecting stamps.
Two highlights of LeRoy's life were the Alamo Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C. and visiting the WWII Museum in New Orleans sponsored by the Gary Sinise Foundation.
Anyone who met LeRoy heard about Jesus. He had a strong faith and was never shy about sharing. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an usher and sang with the Friday Singers.
LeRoy will be dearly missed by friend and family; his influence in all of our lives will never be lost.
Donations in LeRoy’s name can be made to WISH FOR OUR HEROES or the Alamo Honor Fight.
A graveside service will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery on April 2, 2021 at 1:30pm.
