Lillian Darlene Young, age 81, of San Antonio TX was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, November 21, 2023. She was born on May 10, 1942 in San Antonio to Irene Ruth Westrup Dersch and Raymond Dersch. Darlene, as affectionately known by her family and friends, was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
Darlene is survived by her devoted children; Tommy Young (Christine), Kelly Pattie (Clint), and Nicole Carmines (Nathan). She leaves behind her cherished grandchildren; Lacey Pattie, Ashley Pattie, Amelia Carmines, Mia Cabrera, Erica Cabrera, and Phillip Cabrera. Her memory is also cherished by her loving sister, Dixie Pena (Edward). She is preceded in death by her parents; nephew, Michael Ramirez; and her sister, Patricia D. Ramirez.
Darlene graduated from Fox Tech High School in 1960. In 1963 she married Tom Young, Jr. She was a stay-at-home mom to her three children, which was a job she excelled at and completely loved. She was a room mother for each of her children’s elementary school classrooms. Her home was the place all of her children’s friends felt welcome. Darlene began work outside the home in 1988 when she took a secretarial position with the newly formed Community Education Department of NISD. Her endearing personality and playful sense of humor earned Darlene some lifelong friendships with coworkers. Her voice was the warm and friendly one on the other end of the line when calls would come into the office. She retired from NISD after 32 years.
Outside of work, Darlene found joy in her passions. She adored her Texas Rangers and was thrilled when they won the World Series. She enjoyed watching crime drama tv series and Hallmark channel movies. Darlene was also an avid collector of Hallmark Keepsake ornaments and would decorate a gorgeous Christmas tree every year. She loved reading, playing sudoku, and expressing her creativity through crafting and crocheting. Darlene embraced special holiday traditions like putting up an Easter tree with handmade ornaments crafted with egg shells, fabric, and ribbon and creating festive decorations for Christmas. She loved having her family over for the holidays and cooking huge meals for everyone. Darlene had a generous heart and was a regular supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Darlene’s legacy will be remembered through her love of her family, the warmth and generosity she extended to everyone, and her unwavering faith.
