Kay studied Mathematics at Texas Tech University, where she served as President of Kappa Sigma sorority, making numerous friends she would remain in contact with over the course of her life. Following graduation, she taught high school math for seven years in Lubbock and mentored elementary children in math and reading. Kay moved to Dallas and worked for Texas Instruments (TI) where she began working as a programmer. Over the span of a 20-year career with TI, she advanced to the positions of team supervisor and eventually branch supervisor. She retired from TI in 1997. Kay moved to San Antonio in 2005 and became a member of Colonial Hills United Methodist Church. She soon developed a close circle of friends involving herself in Sunday School, Bible studies, and Meals on Wheels. She also loved playing bridge, reading, sewing, quilting, and traveling. Kay made friends easily because she was gracious and kind. She was always willing to sacrifice for others.
Kay’s greatest love was family. The importance of family is evidenced by her hosting large family gatherings at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. In between specials holidays, Kay looked for opportunities for getting the family together. As the youngest and sole surviving sister, Kay became the matriarch of the family, fulfilling her role well. She became the mother to those in the family who had lost their mother. She became the grandmother to those in the family who had lost their grandmother. She was always there as a trusted confidant, a listening ear, and a wise counselor for both family and friends.
Kay is preceded in death by both her father and her mother. She is also preceded in death by her three older sisters: Earline Arnette Byrd, Nelma Nadine Douthit, and Rita Lane Meeks. She is survived by nephews Tom Douthit (Valerie), Walter Byrd Jr. (Tish), Greg Douthit; nieces Kathy Gordon (John), Barbara Morgan (Claude); stepdaughter Karen Musgraves (Craig), stepsons Paul Abrams, Jimmy Abrams; step-granddaughters Kacey Musgraves, Kelly Sutton (Canaan); step-great grandson Samwise Sutton; many great nieces and great nephews.
