Linda was born in Danlî, Honduras where her family owned a small farm. She was preceded in death by her parents, Octavio Avila Pozo and. Maria Avila Rodriguez and two sisters, Lilia Avila and Eva Avila, her Parents-in- Law, Longino and Victoria Candia. Also by brothers-in- Law Luis, Roberto, Longino, Jr., and Pablo Candia. Survivors include her husband. Dr. Ruben Candia and their three children. Ruth Lorena Zealberg (Kevin), John Robert Candia and Bruce Paul Candia. Two grandchildren, Renée Tatiana Beuke and Sean Kevin Zealberg and two great-granddaughters, Camden Nicole Avants (Father Clint Avants) and McKenna Beuke Father (Nick Beuke). Relatives in Honduras include: Niece Maritza Avila Reyes (Ricardo), Nephews Rigoberto (Carmina), Marcos and Ricardo Jr. and nieces Alejandra (Jesus) and Karen. She is also survived by her Candia in-laws Ramon Candia, Rosa Blanco (John), Maria Teresa Brock (David), Celia Medina, Gino Candia (Irma) and, Armando Candia in the United States..She also had numerous nieces and nephews.
Linda attended school in Honduras before being trained as a beautician. She worked in several salons before emigrating to the United States settling at Seaside, California, just outside of Ft. Ord, where she found employment at the Post Beauty Salon. She met her husband, 2/Lt. Ruben Candia, and they were married at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Seaside on January 28, 1961. She became a very dedicated Army Wife, serving in numerous volunteer and community social projects while “mothering” the family in its travels throughout the United States and in Panama and Spain. The Department of the Army awarded her a Certificate of Appreciation for her support.
After her husband retired from the United States Army, he started a second career as a faculty member at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. She served as hostess for numerous foreign visitors to the Languages Department and to the University. She also collaborated in several fund-raising activities as a volunteer, especially at the Alumni events such as the Oyster Bake. During the 28 years of service to St. Mary’s, she accompanied her husband on courtesy and working visits in Spain, Chile, Peru, Mexico and Costa Rica with universities in those countries. She also accompanied him during a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Bella Terra, Spain. They lived in Barcelona for a spring/summer semester in 2007.
In accordance with her wishes, she will be cremated. There will be no formal funeral. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The family wishes to thank the doctors,nurses, and staff of Methodist Hospital for their care and compassion for her in the last days of her life. In lieu of flowers, she has requested contributions be made to a charity of your choice.
