Linda was born on April 24, 1945 in San Antonio, Texas to Roy and Nelda Hartman. At the age of 18 she married the love of her life, James “Jimmy” Harold Hoekstra. Jimmy preceded her in death at the age of 41. Linda was only 38 at the time of Jimmy’s death. Linda and Jimmy raised two daughters, Melissa Volz of San Antonio and Melanie Fugler married to Richard of Lake Jackson. Linda’s four grandchildren Kenlynn Volz, Fisher Fugler, Jamesynn (Jamie) Volz, and Zane Fugler were the absolute light of her life. She always looked forward to the next time she would get to see her grandkids. She had a unique bond with each one of them. Kenlynn, Fisher, Jamie and Zane loved her dearly and had fun joking with her and calling attention to her many sayings they called “Grandma-isms”.
Through most of their childhood, Linda was a stay-at-home mom to Melissa and Melanie. She was always involved in their activities and supported them throughout their school life. Having been a life long dancer, she opened her own dance studio in Bulverde to supplement the family income. Linda taught dance lessons to many Bulverde kids throughout the years. After Jimmy died, Linda found herself faced with being a single mom to two teenage daughters. At that time, she went to work full time for a computer supply company. She started as a receptionist, moved to a manager’s position and eventually turned her talent to outside sales before she retired. Linda married Fred Jonas, a high school friend who she reconnected with five years after Jimmy’s death. Fred was a great Paw Paw to Linda’s grandkids and loved them as his own. Linda lost Fred in 2008 and found herself a widow once again. She demonstrated strength and courage in these difficult seasons of life.
Linda loved serving others, and with a caring heart showed love in many ways. She felt called to help those in need, opening her home to several family members and friends through the years.
Linda was very involved in her church before her illness. She loved singing in the Bulverde United Methodist Choir. One of her favorite events was singing in the “Broadway Comes to Bulverde” shows performed by the BUMC Church Choir. Linda served on many church committees, but one of her favorite roles was serving as the Chair of the Bereavement Committee. She knew the feeling of tremendous loss and could truly minister from her heart. Linda also served at the church rummage sale for many years and took great pride in organizing and participating in the sale. All of these roles fulfilled her servant heart and love for others.
Linda’s life-long friend Dorothy Dobbs was a treasured gift who she loved dearly. She made beautiful friendships through dance, including one of her best friends, Barbara Meyers. Linda walked through life with her Emmaus Sisters, Dorothy McKechnie, Jessie Killian, Nona Lowery, and Leslie Holmes, as well as those who passed before her, June DeVolin and Marion Green. These ladies became some of her closest friends who she affectionately called “her spirit sisters”.
She is survived by her brothers Roy Hartman (Cheryl), Donald Hartman (Debra), brother in laws Herman Hoekstra and Arnold Hoekstra and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Linda is preceded in death by her husbands, James Harold Hoekstra and Fred Jonas, Jr., parents, Roy & Nelda Hartman, step-father Charlie Koch, mother and father in law Andrew and Hilda Hoekstra, sister Carol “Candy” Foerster and brother in law Jerry Foerster, sister in laws Dorothy Kosub, Mary Lou Hoekstra, Dora Mae Hoekstra, brother in law Hubert Kosub, nephew Larry Hoekstra and her beloved “Aunt Bess”.
A special thank you to her brother Don and wife Debra who were only a phone call away when Linda needed anything through her struggles with Parkinson’s.
She loved her family with her whole heart.
Jimmy was her “true love” and her family is comforted knowing she is with him again.
