

Carl Linnaeus "Linn" Maurer, age 91, passed away, January 31, 2014, from a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born March 18, 1922, in San Antonio, Texas to the late Carl Henry Maurer and Mildred Orme Maurer. He married Sarah Hubbard Merritt, October 3, 1948, in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, and they were happily married for 60 years.
Linn attended the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, receiving a Bachelors and Masters of Mechanical Engineering. He later attended the Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts. He volunteered as a Lieutenant for the US Navy during WWII serving as the Flight Deck Engineering Officer on the Aircraft Carrier USS Langley CVL-27 from 1943 to 1946. He remained active in the US Naval Reserves until 1957. He was a registered Professional Engineer with the State of Texas. Linn joined H. B. Zachry Construction Company in 1955 and retired in 1989 as Senior Vice President of the Industrial Division.
Linn was a life-long member of the Episcopal Church. He and Sarah were members of Trinity Episcopal Church where he volunteered many hours on the vestry and management of the church. St. Thomas Episcopal Church became their church upon moving to Hollywood Park in 1978. He continued his service by contributing his skills to the design and construction of additional buildings on the grounds of St. Thomas. Upon retiring, he was able to devote time to woodworking which he used to design and create an altar for the church. Linn enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, music and passing on his love of these to his children.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Hubbard Merritt Maurer and his sister, Betty Mary Maurer Weathers Broline. Linn is survived by his children, Linnaeus Orme (Chuck) Maurer and wife, Denise Dubois; Sarah Elizabeth Maurer Wilkinson and husband, Michael; and Emily Merritt Maurer Schroeter and husband, Jeffrey; grandchildren, Catherine Louise, Molly Jane and Sarah Elizabeth Wilkinson.
