Lois Barber Rogers died March 2, 2024, at her home in San Antonio, Texas. Lois was born on February 25, 1933, in Gulfport, Mississippi, to Jerome Melton Barber and Margaret Caraway Barber, the first of three daughters. She was bestowed with her nickname “Oie” by her youngest sister, Vicki, and has been known by family and friends by that name ever since, even by her beloved great-grandchildren.
Oie grew up on Second Street in Gulfport just a few blocks from her high school sweetheart, Jack Rogers, and graduated from Gulfport High School in 1951. After Jack completed his engineering degree at Ole Miss, they were married at the First Methodist Church of Gulfport on June 3, 1954. Early in their marriage, Jack served in the U.S. Navy. When their first child, Cynthia Leigh, was born in Virginia, Jack received the news by telegram aboard his navy destroyer. Their second and third children, Gary Jackson and David Mark, were born in Mobile and Huntsville, Alabama.
In 1963 Jack’s lifelong career with NASA brought the family back home to Gulfport where Oie taught kindergarten for over a decade at their church, Gulfport First Presbyterian. Lois and Jack were also active in the Gulfport Yacht Club and Merry Maskers, and she was a member of Junior Auxiliary.
After Hurricane Katrina, Lois and Jack moved to Georgetown, Texas, where they enjoyed being near the families of their Texas-based children. After her beloved Jack died in 2015, Oie moved to San Antonio and found many new friends at her new home on the 17th floor of The Towers.
Oie is survived by her three children, Cindy Rogers Fry, Gary Jackson Rogers, and David Mark (Deborah) Rogers; and her grandchildren Mary Frances Calix (Shaun), Leigh Loecher (Christopher), Katherine McAlister (Rob), Alexandra Crawford (Patrick), Amy Hill (Andrew), and Jackson Rogers (Annie). She is also survived by her sisters, Joyce Leonard and Vicki Williams, and nine great-grandchildren. Oie is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Arthur Jackson “Jack” Rogers, Jr.
The family wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to Oie’s devoted caregiver, Stephanie Green, and Vitas Hospice.
