Born in Milton-Freewater, Oregon, Loran began his distinguished career in the United States Air Force in the late 1950s, working as a systems administrator at a time when computers filled entire rooms. He served his country with dedication for 21 years before retiring as a systems analyst. After his military service, Loran embarked on a successful career as a senior programmer analyst, making significant contributions as an early developer of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems. His technical expertise was widely recognized and respected in this emerging field.
Outside of work, Loran was a passionate bowler and golfer. He once bowled a perfect 300 game and made a hole-in-one—feats that brought him great pride and joy.
He met his beloved wife, Olga, in 1992; they married in 1993 and shared 33 years of love and adventure. One of their greatest joys together was traveling, both domestically and internationally. They made countless memories exploring new places and cultures, always living life to the fullest.
Loran is survived by his devoted wife, Olga; his son, Paul Purpura; and his cherished granddaughter, Pepper Purpura. He also leaves behind his beloved cats, Picco DeGato and Valentino; his extended family, Jim and Irene Witt, Yvonne and Ed Vallejo, and Shawn and Bill Holman; along with many nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Xenophon “Xennie” and Ruby Clark, and his siblings: Ada Nikotich, Jean Clark, Faye Pope, Howard Clark, Norma Ayers, and Doris Wright. **. Loran was the youngest in the family and, as his sisters lovingly reminded him, “the good kid—the obedient one.”
Loran will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. His legacy of kindness, humility, and gentle humor lives on in the many lives he touched.
A memorial service will be held on August 14, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX. A procession will follow to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. A reception will take place afterward at a location to be announced at the service.
The family would like to thank Dr. William Kelly and his nursing staff, Rhonda and Guadalupe, at Mays Cancer Center for their exceptional care during Loran’s treatment. Heartfelt thanks also go to the Heart to Heart Hospice team—Alovya McBryde, Mimi, Margaret Brady, and Edgar Simmons—for their compassionate support during a very difficult time.
