

Louis Howard Haring, Jr., age 92, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2009. Born in Beaumont, Texas to Louis H. Haring, Sr. and Alma Campbell Haring, Louis graduated from Jefferson High School in 1934 and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from the University of Texas in 1938, where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Louis was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on September 3, 1938. He served his country first with the 61st Field Artillery Battery of the First Calvary Division and then transferred to the Army Air Corps serving as an Aerial Gunnery instructor. Immediately following World War II, he served two years in Karachi, India. After 38 years of active and reserved serve, he retired as a Lt. Col. in the U.S. Air force Reserve.
Louis married Isabel Hill Haring of Laredo, Texas on July 10, 1943. He went on to become an active independent petroleum geologist for 60 years. In addition, he was a member and president of the South Texas Geological Society. He was also a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, an Emeritus member of the American Institute of Professional and Certified Geologists, a member of the American Association of Petroleum Landmen, Independent Producers Association of America, and the San Antonio Association of Petroleum Landmen.
Louis was an active member of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church where he was on the Administrative Board since 1959 and served as chairman during 1962-1964. He also served as a Trustee of the church for many years and was chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1985-1991.
Active in the community, Louis, who received his Eagle Scout Award in 1930, served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 88 and on the Board of Trustees of the Alamo Heights Independent School district for two terms, from 1966-1972. He was also a past president of the Oak Hills Country Club and the San Antonio Petroleum Club.
Louis was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 43 years, Isabel Hill Haring; parents, Louis and Alma Haring; and sister, Margaret Barnes. He is survived by his sons, Travis Hill Haring, Howard Lee Haring, and Frank Boyd Haring and wife Michelle; granddaughters Conner Campbell Haring and Isabel Oliver Haring; grandson, Hunter Hill Haring; daughters-in-law, Molly Conner Haring and Elizabeth Skewes Haring; dearly loved nieces and nephews; and special friend, Patricia Begeman.
