She was born on March 27, 1930, to Hans Wilhelm Paul Schulz-Bernhardt and Anna Margaret Felicitas Schulz in Mexico City, Mexico. She is now reunited with her parents, her beloved husband Earl Bishop Horton, her son James Edgar Horton, and her granddaughter’s husband, Jesse Martinez.
Growing up in Mexico, Louise, and her older brother Walter, attended a primary German school and Louise quickly became tri-lingual, in German, Spanish and English. Life in Mexico was full of adventures whether it was showing American Tourists around the city (her parents owned a hotel) or visiting the pyramids and other scenic spots, there was always an interesting story to be told. During World War II, the family moved to Ventura, California where she completed her secondary education.
At the end of the War, the family moved back to Mexico and resumed their American Tourist business at the Park Villa, which still stands today. It was during that time that she met an ex-U.S. Air Force Sargeant, Earl Horton, of Tyler, Texas, and whom she later married. Since Louise’s parents were no longer living, she and Earl operated the business. Soon, James and Karin, their two children, were born. Life was busy while hosting and servicing American Tourists from all over the U.S. at their hotel. However, since Louise and Earl both had their pilot’s license, they enjoyed their frequent trips, flying their plane and traveling throughout Mexico and Texas. Flying down to Acapulco, going scuba diving or working with a University of Texas professor researching fruit bats in caves around Mexico City, life was certainly an adventure for this young couple. Both Earl and Louise were active members of the Masonic/Eastern Star Lodge.
In 1960, the family permanently moved to Tyler, Texas. Because Louise was tri-lingual she worked for various oil and gas companies, translating documents and land grants, and teaching Spanish at Tyler ISD. As a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, she taught many children and adults how to swim at the local YMCA. Louise also earned her Associate Arts degree from Tyler Junior College.
After Earl’s death she moved to San Antonio to be closer to family. In San Antonio, Louise quickly found her new home with the Beethoven Damenchor. Music was always in her heart; therefore, the Damenchor brought much joy. She enjoyed the opportunities to volunteer at different events and held various officer positions. She was the happiest when she was singing.
She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Karin Stanley, two grandchildren, Kristin Martinez and Brian Stanley, and three great grandchildren, Madeline, Cooper and Makenna. She was the best “Omi”, attending countless school, sporting events and dance/cheer recitals for all the children. Many thanks to the Teele family members in Mexico, who always brought Tia Lulu much joy and love.
Services will be held at Sunset Memorial Park and Funeral Home at 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas on Thursday, December 4, 2025 at 10:00 am. Reception will follow at Beethoven Hall, 422 Pereida Street, San Antonio, Texas. Interment will be at Tyler Memorial Cemetery in Tyler, Texas at a later date.
The family extends their sincere appreciation to Dr. David Marks, Compasses, Chaplain Phil Johnson, and with much love to RN Cayla Stuck.
