LTC Lee J. Chegin USA(Ret.)

LTC Lee J. Chegin USA(Ret.) passed away on July 12, 2018 at the age of 89 in San Antonio, TX. He was born on March 4, 1929 in Donora, PA to George and Irene Chegin. He is preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers: Tom Chegin (Loretta) and George Chegin (Marian). He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years: Betty Chegin; children: Catherine Carleton (William), John Chegin (Maureen), Tom Chegin (Lisa); grandchildren: Matthew Hamilton (Brandi), Luke Hamilton (Amber), Chelsea Chegin (Mark), Clinton Chegin, Jack Chegin, Cade Chegin; one great granddaughter: Dylan and many other loving family members and friends. Lee was known for his great sense of humor and wonderful story telling. He graduated from VMI in 1950 where he graduated with honors. He went into the Army and served in the Korean War. Returning from the Korean War he had a tour of duty in France, there he met and married the love of his life Betty. He was transferred to Fort. Belvoir, VA where he was teaching Engineering. Soon after he was transferred Taipei, Taiwan where he had a MAG assignment assisting the Chinese Counterparts. After returning to the states he went to Ohio State University to pursue a Master’s degree in Engineering in 1961. His thesis was published in a national engineering magazine. After graduation he went to Washington, DC where he was assigned to the Chief of Engineer’s Office. From DC he went to Fort Devens, MA where he was a Battalion Commander. He served two tours in Vietnam, and upon his retirement from Fort Sam Houston he received a Meritorious Medal for his high achievement. After serving his country for 20 years in the Army he went to work as The Director of Engineering at the City Water Board. Lee was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was admired, loved and will be greatly missed.
