

Lucy May Reager Hale, age 87, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. She was born on May 9, 1935 in Huntly, Virginia to Viola Virginia (Wines) and Charles Thomas Reager. She was lovingly raised and taught by her grandmother, Ora Mae Kines Reager at the Reager School. She completed her R.N. course of study at Grace Hospital and the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary in 1961. She received a B.S. degree from the Tift College of Mercer University, and a B.B.A. from Georgia College and State University, and an M.S.N. from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta. She also received an M.S.N. in Mental Health from the University of Texas at Austin. Before entering her career for the Department of Defense and the Veterans Administration, she was an officer in the United States Air Force and earned the rank of First Lieutenant. While she was stationed at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, she met and married her husband of 56 years, John Allison Hale. They then moved to Warner Robins, Georgia, where she would work for the Department of Defense as a Veterans Administration staff nurse. She was employed as an R.N. for a number of years in Virginia, Georgia, and Texas. She retired as a Professor of Nursing at San Antonio College after 30 years of service dutifully teaching thousands of students. After retirement, she proudly served as Literature Coordinator for the San Antonio Women’s Connection for several years. She possessed an extraordinary love for literature and was a voracious reader. Her reading interests ranged from her grandson’s pre-school literature to economics, math, and the sciences. She was a lover of animals, and never turned down a sick, wounded, or hungry animal. She was always generous, courteous and friendly and would always offer aid to anyone in need. She dedicated much of her love, compassion and duty to her precious only grandson, John Reager Hale Jacobs. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Betty Lou Reager Lake; sister, Margaret Reager Tanner; and husband, John A. Hale. Lucy is survived by her daughter, Carol Reager Hale; and her grandson, John Reager Hale Jacobs.
