Lucy Casillas Ramos (“Nani”) was a beautifully creative, vibrant, and strong-willed mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt, comadre, madrina and friend, who entered into her Eternal home on Saturday, July 22, 2023.
“Luz” was born in San Antonio, Texas, during the Great Depression to Francisca and Antonio Casillas on September 5, 1926. She lived in Dilley with her grandparents but later moved to San Antonio to be with her parents. She married Edgar C. Ramos, Jr. on August 21, 1949, and were parents to Susie Ann Ramos Mendoza. She is survived by her daughter, son-in-law Ron, granddaughters Felicia Smith (Bradford), Melissa Tully (George), Jessica Adcock (Nathan), and great-grandchildren Noah Smith, Jacob Smith, Artie Tully, and Lucy Tully.
Lucy was an artist of all mediums, including paint, crochet, and embroidery. Visitors to any Mendoza home during the holidays would find a fireplace mantle filled with Christmas stockings and decorations she lovingly made with her "darling little hands." She sold and gifted hundreds to family and friends.
She loved playing games and was a fierce Bunco competitor, playing with Club Capri for over 50 years. She and her granddaughters would play poker and 31 and spend many vacations losing and winning quarters. "Lucky Lucy" loved to travel to Las Vegas with John and Grace Hancock to gamble (she only played slot machines), usually winning. And at nearly every church raffle she'd end up with a prize or two.
Lucy could be described as a perfect mix of sugar and salt—both sweet and mischievous. She could never put on airs. She knew exactly who she was and was someone to admire and emulate. "Nani-isms" were her words and actions to live by and included stuffing tissues in her sleeve (so you always had one at the ready), making tiny Christmas cookies (so you could eat more of them), and having coffee at all hours of the day (why not!?)
She worked as a shoe saleswoman for over 30 years at Wolff & Marx and Rhodes Department stores and was known for juggling many customers at once and finding everyone just the right pair of shoes. Luz took pride in and enjoyed her independence well into her 90’s. She couldn’t sit still, and you could find her washing dishes, raking leaves, or tending to her rose bushes in her beloved home.
Her love of family and friends is best remembered for her love of parties and celebrations. Her thoughtful nature included sending cards for every occasion, music-filled evenings until 3 a.m., and attending any and all special celebrations for her daughter and grandchildren, including the most recent: her youngest granddaughter's wedding this past April.
She was a woman of faith and lived a Christian life, attending Mass regularly. She revered the Virgen de Guadalupe. She would say her morning prayers every day.
Our lights will shine a bit dimmer without our magical Luz, but we will remember how she lit up a room like no other, her smile and sense of humor, and the beauty of her character that made us all feel happy and loved. She will be missed so much and loved forever.
Her life ended under the tender care of several amazing individuals — Maria Castro, Mercedes Ortiz and Rosa and Eddie Rodriguez. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Renaissance House, 227 Saratoga, San Antonio, TX, 78213.
