

Luis was born August 19, 1922, in San Antonio, Texas. He is preceded in death by his mother, Petra Sanchez and Father, Brijido Alonzo; Sisters, Frances, Minnie, and Rosita; brothers, Eluterio and Albert. He is survived by his children, Lucille A. Meritz and husband, Neal; Ralph E. Alonzo and wife, Leticia; Leonard T. Alonzo and Jennifer Logan; Louise E. Moreno and husband, Pete.
Luis graduated from Sidney Lanier High School, attended San Antonio College and St. Mary's University. Luis enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to the USS Wasp. The Wasp was credited with shooting down the last kamikaze of WW II. Luis was awarded several medals for his service including the Asiatic Pacific medal with one leaf cluster. Upon discharge he returned to work at Kelly Air Force Base where he retired 34 years later as an Aerospace Technician Engineering Drafting Supervisor. After retiring from Kelly, he went to work for Datapoint Corp. He retired from Datapoint as Senior Designer after 10 years.
In 1947, he married his neighborhood sweetheart, Eulalia Pineda. Luis and Eulalia raised a family of five children. They enjoyed dancing together from their teens until they were senior adults. He was a founding member of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church and was on the church building committee. He was an active parishioner for over 50 years.
In November, 2014, he was recognized by Senator Pete Gallegos as the oldest living survivor of the U.S.S. Wasp in the San Antonio area.
Luis said the pinnacle of his life's achievements was when he purchased a vacation house near Canyon Lake. He loved watching his children and grandchildren having fun boating and fishing while spending time with the family at the lake. In his later years, Luis invited his kids and grandchildren from as far away as California, Colorado and Alabama to go salt water fishing in Rockport.
For the past several years, Luis lived with his daughter, Louise( Moochie) and her husband Pete, at their Moreno Ranch. On June 3, 2008, the family lost their beloved wife and mother as Laley went to eternal rest at the age of 84 years. Luis and Laley were married for 61 years.
Luis is survived by his beloved grandchildren: Javier Roeth, Nyssa Tsakiris and husband, Shaun; Christopher Alonzo; Aaron Alonzo and wife, Shawn; John Alonzo and wife, Belinda; Brian, Leah and Antonio Alonzo; Misty Miranda and husband, Michael; Matthew Moreno; Olivia, Gaby and Arthur Flores. He also leaves behind his great grandchildren: Niko, Kai and Mateo Tsakiris; Ameliana, Evangelina, Jhonen, and Sadie Alonzo; Joey and Jacob Miranda. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A special thank you is extended to Sylvia Alonzo for not only the nurturing care she gave Luis but Laley as well.
Visitation will be on Thursday, September 17, 2015 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Porter Loring on McCullough.
