It is with deep sadness and profound respect that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Louie “Luis Ortiz Barrientes”, who passed away on September 30, 2026, at the age of 76. A proud American and a proud United States Marine, Luis lived a life defined by honor, courage, and a fierce devotion to his family and country.
Luis was born on December 20, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas, to his late parents, Lurden and Josephine (Josie) O. Barrientes. He carried the strength, discipline, and loyalty he learned in the Marine Corps throughout his life, and he remained a Marine at heart until the very end.
He was the kind of man who could make you laugh, tell it like it was, and make his presence known wherever he went. A strong man with a big heart, he was a protector, a provider, and someone who loved his family in his own way. His patriotism ran deep, but so did his profound love for his family and his undeniable sense of humor. He wasn't perfect, and he didn't pretend to be, but he was genuine, unforgettable, and deeply loved.
Luis is preceded in death by his parents, Lurden and Josie Barrientes, as well as his sister, Sylvia B. Ramirez, and his brothers, Frank and Julio Barrientes.
His legacy of strength continues throughout the family he cherished. His children survive him: His son Louie Barrientes and his wife Lisa Barrientes, and his daughter Yesenia Merlo and her husband Rodolfo Merlo; his grandchildren, Barbara Merlo and Ryan Perez; and his great-grandchildren Brooks and Layton. He leaves behind his brother, Lurden Barrientes, his only surviving sibling along with many extended family members and friends. After the passing of his companion, Linda Pedraza 2006 he continued to be a father figure to her daughter’s Jessica, Leo, Lydia Pedraza, and grandchildren (Victoria & Diego) loving presence he showed family is not always defined by blood, but by love, loyalty, and by being there when it matters. Family and friends will carry his memory, and he will be dearly miss his humor, his strength, and his unmistakable presence.
Semper Fi, Dad.
