
At the age of three, she moved with her family to the town of Floydada, TX, where he father opened a lumber yard. She attended elementary school in Floydada and later graduated from high school in Vernon, Texas in the year 1927. After that, Lula Kate attended and graduated from Baylor University in 1931.
Upon graduation, she began teaching primary school in Vernon Public Schools, where at the time women teachers were not allowed to marry. In addition to not being able to marry, teachers were expected to update their education at least every three years. Due to this requirement, she also took graduate courses at Colorado State University, Colorado University and Texas Tech University during summer breaks. Lula Kate also took courses at Harrisburg PA Community College.
In August 1944, Lula Kate enlisted in the Women's Army Corps and underwent basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, GA. For three month she was station at Love Field in Dallas. In December 1944, she requested and received a transfer to Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska.
On November 31, 1945, she received her discharge from the service and remained to continue working in the Base Headquarters for the Civil Service.
On December 21, 1947, she married then Captain Marvin S. Sims, a pilot and Maintenance Officer with the 46th Reconnaissance Squadron which was exploring and photographing the North Pole. While married, Lula Kate moved several times with her husband and family to numerous localesEl Paso, TX, Roswell, NM; Merced, CA; Tachikawa, Japan; Montgomery, AL; Harrisburg, PA; and finally San Antonio. She worked with the Civil Service for 13 years teaching at the Defense Language Institute until retiring in 1981.
Lula Kate is survived by her husband, Marvin Sims; son, Marvin Sims, Jr.; daughter, Barbara Hayden; three grandchildren, Marvin Sims III, Elena Christine Hayden; and Jared Sims. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relations.
