Lydia S. Hersh passed away on November 19, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 90. Born on February 1, 1935, in Szczecin, Poland, to Jonas and Frieda Stiehl, Lydia’s early life was marked by extraordinary resilience. She survived the Holocaust and World War II before spending five years in Germany. At age 15, she arrived in New York City with courage and determination, beginning a new chapter in a land whose language she did not yet speak.
Lydia pursued her education at the City College of New York, where she met her husband, Evan Hersh. Together they built a life that spanned from New York to Bethesda, Maryland; Palo Alto, California; and eventually Houston, Texas, where they raised their three children. Later chapters unfolded in the tranquil foothills of Tucson, Arizona, before she returned to Texas—this time to San Antonio—to be closer to family during Evan’s illness.
A woman of intellect and purpose, Lydia earned degrees in chemistry and business administration. Her career included roles as a chemist, teacher, and business manager at Baylor University and the University of Arizona. Lydia lived with grace and unwavering strength. She honored her parents and in-laws with heartfelt devotion and created joyful celebrations for those around her. A passionate reader with a quick wit and generous spirit, she greeted life with curiosity and compassion. To those who knew her, Lydia was a steadfast presence—a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who quietly exemplified the art of living fully.
Lydia is survived by her children, Mark Hersh (Jennifer), Daren Hersh (Sara), Carolyn Kohnhorst (Chris); Grandchildren, David Hersh (Christina), Lauren Hersh, Sam Hersh, Rachel Kohnhorst (Rachael), Emily Hersh (Steven), Robin Kohnhorst; Great Grandchildren, Olivia and Eleanor Hersh.; And many friends around the world and loving caretakers from Cardinal Senior Care.
