It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Melvin “Kent” Bell, who entered his eternal rest on August 24, 2026, at the age of 85, following a hard-fought battle with respiratory disease. True to his nature, Kent gave the fight everything he had.
Kent was born on March 4, 1941, in Delhi, Oklahoma, to Dora Grey Bell and Melvin Bell. He was raised on his family’s corn farm, where he learned from an early age the value of hard work, responsibility, and perseverance.
In 1963, Kent proudly entered the United States Army, where he honorably served his country. His commitment to service was a reflection of the strength, discipline, and character that defined so much of his life.
Following his military service, Kent continued his education at West Texas State University, graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. He went on to build a long and successful 38-year career with Diamond Shamrock, later becoming Valero Energy. Throughout his career, Kent held positions of increasing responsibility and ultimately retired from Valero Energy as a Re-imaging/Rebranding Manager. He was proud of his work and was known for his strong work ethic, determination, and dedication.
Kent was also an avid sports fan, especially of the San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Cowboys, LA Dodgers, and Houston Astros. He proudly followed the teams, enjoyed watching their games, and loved sharing his enthusiasm with family and friends. Whether cheering from home or discussing the latest game, sports were a source of enjoyment and connection throughout his life.
Above all, Kent was a man of deep faith. He was a devoted Christian and a faithful member of Northern Hills United Methodist Church. He cherished his spiritual community and the brothers and sisters in Christ who became an important part of his life. His faith remained a source of strength and comfort throughout his journey.
Kent was devoted to his family and will be remembered for the love he gave, the kindness he showed, the people he helped, and the countless memories he created. His life cannot be measured simply by the years he was here, but by the lives he touched and the lasting impression he left on those fortunate enough to know him.
Kent was preceded in death by his parents, Dora Grey Bell and Melvin Bell; his sons, Jason Bob Bell and Shawn Bell; and his sister, Carolyn Jo Bell.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Debra Sue Bell; daughter, Jessica Vargas and her husband, Mark Vargas; grandchildren, Nicole Vargas and Isabella Vargas; and estranged daughter, Deidra Martinez.

To his family, friends, caregivers, and all those who were there for him, your time, kindness, compassion, and love meant more than words can ever express. We will always be grateful for each person who touched Kent’s life and helped make his journey a little brighter. Your love and support will remain in our hearts and will never be forgotten.

Services will be held at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 N Loop 1604 E, San Antonio, Texas, on Thursday, September 10, 2026. Visitation from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. Tribute from 7:00pm to 8:00pm
Celebration of Life will be held on Friday September 11, 2026, at 11:00 am at Northern Hills United Methodist Church. Reception for family and friends will follow immediately.
A separate interment service with military honors will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:00pm.
