

Dad was preceded in death by his first wife, Isabel Sanchez Torres, his parents, Thomas Torres, Sr. and Prudencia Torres, his brother, Tomas Torres, Jr., and his sister, Helen Lozano.
Dad is survived by his second wife, Ethna Torres as well as his 3 children that he raised with his first wife. They are Manuel Torres, Jr. (Michele), Dolores C. Leal, Anna M. (Cavazos) Rocha. In addition, Dad is survived by 9 grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth MacMillan (Dean), Matthew Manuel Torres (Kara), Javier Luis Leal (Brianda), Jorge Antonio Cavazos, Jr., Evelyn Ernestina Lozano (Paul), Joseph Thomas Cavazos, Jaime Luis Cavazos, and Isabella Marie Cavazos as well as his two Great Grandchildren, Tomas Melvin MacMillan and Danielle Leal. Dad is also survived by Ethna’s 2 daughters & their spouses, and her son Dylan Scammell (Tyra). He also leaves one sister, Sara Lewis (Arthur) as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins, colleagues and friends.
Dad graduated from Fox Tech High School here in San Antonio, Texas. It is there, at Fox Tech High School, that he met Isabel. They were high school sweethearts and became husband and wife on April 5, 1959.
After graduating high school, Dad went on to further his education. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration as well as a Master of Public Administration from St. Mary’s University. He also was awarded a Master of Arts from Our Lady of the Lake University.
Dad held jobs in both the public and private sector. He also served as a lecturer for the Alamo Community College District.
Dad was most proud of his military career. He served his country as a United States Army Reservist. Dad received a Direct Commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1972. He would enjoy a career that included serving as EEO Officer, instructor with the US Army and with the 321st Civil Affair Group. Dad finished his military career and retired as Major Manuel Torres, Sr.
Dad was also very involved in the Catholic Church, namely Immaculate Heart of Mary and Holy Spirit Parishes, respectively. Dad became a Knight of Columbus, eventually being knighted as a Fourth Degree Knight. He, along with his spouses, served the Lord as Eucharistic Ministers.
In 2002, he met his second wife, Ethna. Eventually, they married in 2003. He embraced her children and grandchildren as his own.
We, Dad’s family, would like to take this opportunity to express our sincerest gratitude and appreciation for the compassionate care that Dad received from Mary Werner of Angel Guardians, the Staff at Mercy House – Assisted Living/Memory Care, Hope Hospice, Vitas Hospice and Caraday Wurzbach Nursing Facility as well as S.A.M.C., Methodist Hospital, and Christus Santa Rosa – New Braunfels.
