

A proud graduate of Midland High School, Manuel went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Texas at San Antonio, TX. His lifelong passion for youth sports and community development led him to an inspiring career of service and leadership.
Manuel dedicated much of his life to helping young athletes grow through programs such as the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA), where he began on December 11, 1995 and later served as Executive Director for the Texas division. He also worked extensively with the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department’s Soccer Program and collaborated with Coach Gregg Popovich in the Drug-Free Youth Basketball League as a NYSCA Certified Coach since December 09, 1997. His career also included meaningful work as Director of Sales for Ramada and with Fort Sam Houston Recreation Services.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Manuel proudly held a U.S Navy “Ancient Order of Deep” certificate, commemorating his crossing of the equator - a symbol of his adventurous spirit and service. He served 20 years in the United States Navy.
Manuel met the love of his life, Lidia Escobedo, on December 30, 1994, in San Antonio. Their journey together was filled with love, laughter, and devotion.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Modesto Munoz (June 15, 1915 - October 29, 1988) and Anita (Munoz) Menchaca (November 07, 1918 - February 18, 1995); his brothers Modesto “Moe” Munoz Jr. (January 28, 1943 - March 13, 2016) and Ernesto “Ernie” Munoz (February 18, 1948 - December 28, 2019), and his son, Roberto Munoz (November 04, 1963 - June 06, 2017)

Manuel is survived by his loving wife, Lidia Escobedo, and children Lupe Munoz, Raymond Munoz, Lisa Munoz, and Anna Marie Shurley; along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by his siblings Chavela Ramirez, Elosia Vargas, Sylvia Macias, and Eulalio “Eddie” Munoz.
Pallbearers will be Frank Arechiga, Ralph Espeleta, Juan Soto, Ron Arteaga, Mario Pablos, Dominic Pablos, and Gael Olguin.
Memorial donations may be made in Manuel’s name to AARP or the charity of your choice. His legacy of mentorship, service, and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas 78218, on April 28, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, followed by a Funeral Service at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas 78218, on April 29, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas 78209, on April 29, 2026, beginning at 2:45 pm.
