Marcelina Marquez, born on January 26, 1936, in DeValle, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 88. Marcelina lived a life filled with love, resilience, and faith. She married the love of her life, Lucio Marquez, on March 25, 1950, and together they raised six children: Martha, Mary Lou, Ellen, Rita (deceased), Sylvia and Alfonso. Widowed at the age of 40, Marcelina faced life’s challenges with unwavering strength and determination, working tirelessly to provide for her family.
Known for her warmth and hospitality, Marcelina welcomed everyone into her home with an open heart. Her kitchen was often filled with the comforting aroma of her delicious Mexican dishes and her handmade flour tortillas were a family favorite. She took pride in creating a loving and stable home for her children, despite the hardships she faced as a single mother.
Marcelina was fiercely independent in her younger years, always preferring to take on tasks herself rather than rely on others. As she grew older, illness slowed her down, but her spirit remained strong. Although it was difficult for her to become dependent on others, she continued to live with grace and dignity.
A devout Catholic, Marcelina maintained a close relationship with her church throughout her life. When she could no longer attend Mass in person, she faithfully watched daily services on television. Her deep faith brought her comfort and peace in her later years. One of her greatest joys was her frequent pilgrimages to the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle, a place that held deep spiritual meaning for her.
In her free time, Marcelina enjoyed listening to Spanish music, dancing and spending time with her beloved grandchildren, whom she showered with snacks and love. She also found joy in crocheting and cherished her trips to bingo, where she made many friends. She was a caring and generous soul, always willing to help those in need.
Marcelina was preceded in death by her loving husband Lucio, parents, Jose and Juanita Castro, daughter Rita, and her siblings Camerino Castro, Vicente Castro, Genaro Castro, Antonio Castro, and Faustina Gonzales.
She is survived by her children: Alfonso Marquez (Ory), Martha Carden (Michael PID), Mary Lou Vela (John Rodriguez), Ellen Rios (Juan), Sylvia Salazar (Joe) and her son in law Bob Batson (Rita PID); siblings, Robert Castro, Frances Luna, and Flora Castro; 41 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren as well as numerous family and friends.
Marcelina will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and friend, a woman of great strength and faith who always put her family first. Her life was a testament to the power of love, perseverance, and faith. Rest in peace, Marcelina. You will always be cherished.
