Marcia “Marci” Mathews Aguirre was born in Las Cruces, NM on September 6, 1962, and left her family and many friends on December 10, 2024. She is survived by her loving parents, Lonnie and Helen Mathews, sister Sherry Mathews, brother Brad Mathews, and nephew Julian Mathews. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Louis and Margie Danieli (maternal) and Oren and Essie Mathews (paternal).
Her childhood was spent in Roswell and Las Cruces, New Mexico. In the 4th grade, Marci won the city-wide math contest and her love of numbers continued, leading her to earn a degree in accounting from New Mexico State University. Throughout the years, she remained a loyal Aggies fan and enjoyed cheering on her Aggie football team.
Marci will always be remembered for her cooking and baking skills. She began baking and decorating cakes at the young age of 12, making a beautiful, tiered wedding cake when she was only 13 years old. Over the years, her baking was enjoyed by friends, neighbors and co-workers. Marci shared that her work team came to expect her home-baked cakes for their birthdays because they were made with love.
Throughout most of her career, Marci worked in the finance industry. She had a strong work ethic, enjoyed her work and the people she worked with. Lasting relationships were built with co-workers and her closeknit group of friends were from her job. She was an admirable leader who cared deeply about those she worked with and enjoyed mentoring team members.
Marci was faithful to her family, friends, neighbors, career and community. Marci found joy in helping others and satisfied her need to provide service to her adopted city, San Antonio, by donating much of her time, boundless energy, and leadership by serving on the board for several organizations, including the YWCA, Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM), and Susan G. Komen. Marci truly made a difference in her lifetime. While employed at World Savings, Marci earned the Chairman’s Award for volunteerism and was recognized nationwide for her contributions to the community.
Marci was an incredible light to her family and friends. She was courageous and kind, always willing to help others in whatever way she could, be it cooking comfort food, acting as a driver, or just being a listening ear. Her special power was the ability to make friends wherever she went.
Marci demonstrated to everyone how to enjoy life and make the most of your time here on earth. She was a fun-loving friend, who believed that almost every event in life was a champagne moment, sometimes with a tiara on her head, sometimes dressed like Marilyn Monroe (for her 60th birthday), but always with a smile on her lips. Marci loved Fiesta in San Antonio, participating in all the festivities wearing giant flower hats with her group of friends.
Marci’s passing has left a void in the hearts of her family and friends, who will remember her for the wonderful daughter, sister, aunt, and friend she was. Marci’s friends share special memories of their time with her including extensive travels with Thom, many talks on the back porch with Allison, her first friend in San Antonio, New Year’s Eve parties with Rosanna, vacations to Mexico with Virginia, Sunday drives in the Hill Country with Becky, and her annual participation in Fiesta events with Paula and Yolanda that became newsworthy because of the elaborate floral hats they wore and were photographed in. As Becky put it,“She was good, she was kind, she was as bright as the moon. Our Marci was a shining star that dimmed way too soon.”
