

Marcia Alvarez, age 73, passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Ohio on September 11, 1941 to parents, Roney and Ione Powell. She grew up in Lakeland, Florida and later joined Eastern Airlines where she worked for more than ten years as a flight attendant, based in Boston. In 1970 she married Chava Alvarez and lived in Los Angeles where their son, Christopher, was born. During those years, Marcia had the opportunity to take painting lessons and, over time, she created a great collection of aquarelles and pencil motives. Eventually, she turned to painting where she perfected a very unique style. She was active in the community wherever she and Chava lived; from Washington D.C. where she was a wife in the diplomatic corp., to San Antonio as the Executive Secretary and member of the Board of Directors of the Blood Bank and active in the local chapter for children with Down Syndrome; she organized during Christmas the fantasy trip to the North Pole for children with cancer. She moved to Port Aransas in the eighties where she was on the Board of Directors of the Art Center and active in the Garden Club. Marcia and Chava travelled the world together including trips to the Far East, Europe and Australia.
She leaves behind a large and loving family including her husband, Salvador "Chava" Alvarez; son, Christopher Alvarez; step children: Patricia Alvarez, Loreen Alvarez, Anthony Alvarez, Roberto Alvarez, Maria Theresa Alvarez and Cristina Alvarez; sisters, Sandra Blair, Victoria Sue Murphy, Cindy Powell and Kimberly Khloe Powell; brother, Roney Raleigh Powell, Jr., 21 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 19, 2015 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
