Margaret “Peggy” Anderson, 96, of San Antonio, Texas, died Friday, August 25, 2023. Peggy was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, to Burl and Mabel McAninch on August 16, 1927. Peggy spent her early childhood in Aitkin County, Minnesota with her six siblings. In the early 1940s, her family relocated to Orinda, California, where Peggy attended Acalanes Union High School. After she graduated high school, Peggy and her sister Norma moved to Austin, Texas, where she met and married Joe E. Anderson on August 25, 1950. Peggy completed her education at Texas State University in San Marcos. Peggy was generous, compassionate, and dearly loved her family and pets. She was a talented cook, an avid antique collector, and seasoned traveler. Peggy and her husband traveled to many countries, including Austria, China, and Russia. When she wasn’t traveling, you could often find her laughing on the phone with her sister Norma, winning at a game of cards, or walking with her husband and dogs through San Antonio’s Monte Vista neighborhood, where they lived in a beautiful historic home for many decades. Peggy was very active in the San Antonio community, including with the San Antonio Conservation Society, where she served as president for many years and was heavily involved with the group’s annual cascarones fundraiser.
Peggy is survived by her nieces, Ruth Langford of San Antonio, and Kathleen Smelker of Austin, and many more beloved nieces, nephews, and their families. Her loving impact and joyous memories will be long cherished by her family and friends. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, who passed in 2016, and her son, Johnny, who passed in 1987. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Pearl Arizmendez, who not only took wonderful care of Peggy over the last five years, but was also one of Peggy’s closest friends.
