Margaret Ann Wilkes Gonzalez

Margaret Ann Wilkes Gonzalez, age 92, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 30, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas. Margaret was born on December 3, 1933 in Lyons, Georgia. She grew up in Vidalia where her family raised pigs and grew the famous Vidalia onions, cotton and tobacco.

Margaret’s independent spirit showed itself early in life, as she went to work as a telephone operator, managing several party lines. It was at a dance at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, that she met Dr. Roy R. Gonzalez, the love of her life. They were married just a month later, beginning a marriage that would last 72 years. The couple moved to Kansas City while Roy completed his orthodontic residency before settling permanently in San Antonio, where they built their life together.

Margaret was always deeply involved in her sons’ lives. She loved fishing and hunting alongside her family. A favorite family story occurred during one Christmas holiday. While deer hunting with her son, Roy, she shot a deer and had it dressed and hanging at the locker before her husband even made it home from work.

The Gonzalez home was always full of family, friends, and of Margaret’s warmth. She had a passion for cooking, fashion, interior design, and architecture. Above all, she loved to travel, with New York and Paris among her favorite destinations. Some of her most treasured memories were the trips she took with her grandsons, showing them her favorite restaurants and sights.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Sally and Luther Wilkes and her son, Robert Wayne Gonzalez. Margaret is survived by her husband, Dr. Roy R. Gonzalez; her son, Dr. Roy Gonzalez, Jr. (Christie); her grandsons, Roy Wesley Gonzalez, and Samuel Wilkes Gonzalez, DVM; her sister- in -law, Gloria Garcia; her nephew, Gabe Garcia (Judy); and her niece, Deborah Garcia.

The family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. Mark Thornton. A special thanks to the large team of people who made it possible for her to remain in her home.
