
Margaret Read Haymore King, born April 3, 1907 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, died Thursday, April 12, 2007 in San Antonio. She was born 100 years ago to Jean Constance Walker of Waco, TX and German Pittman Haymore of Chattanooga, TN both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, James Walker Haymore and Charles Haymore, her stepfather, Dr. Harry McCrindell Johnson and her stepbrothers, Harry McCrinndell Johnson, Jr. and Stewart Courtney Johnson.
Mrs. King moved to San Antonio as a small child, attending Old Main Avenue High School and Incarnate Word College. On March 6, 1929, she married Creston Alexander King, now deceased. She is survived by her two children, Margaret King Stanley of San Antonio and Creston Alexander King, Jr. of New Orleans; her five grandchildren, Torrey Margaret Stanley Carleton of San Antonio, Jean Cullen Stanley of New York City, Creston A. King III of Tucson, William R. King II of New York City and Laura Read King Irving of Dallas; and five great-grandchildren, Alexandra Read Irving and Jeremy Scott Irving of Dallas, Creston Alexander King IV and Mignon Elizabeth King of Tucson and Grace Ann Reynolds King of New York City.
Mrs. King was a member of St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church, St. Monica�s Guild, the Jr. League of San Antonio, the Battle of Flowers Association and the Nimble Thimbles; she served on the Board of the Christmas Clearing House where she originated the large Christmas tree which is now displayed annually in December in Alamo Plaza and Madonna Center where she developed a program that taught skills to women of need in the community. In recent years, her colorful hand-knitted blankets warmed newborns at the Santa Rosa Children�s Hospital.
Mrs. King was Duchess of Syracuse for the Order of the Alamo in The Court of the Mediterranean in 1928 and in 1947 served as the Order�s Mistress of the Robes designing the �Court of Holidays.� She was a Member of the San Antonio Country Club and the Argyle Club.
